Our CEO Peter Devries doesn't think every learner should pursue a degree. He talks about why high-quality certificates are often the better fit, why institutions need to "introduce more granular credentials", and how Modern Campus bridges the gap between education and careers. https://lnkd.in/dxCsPw4s

When I was in high school in Eastern Kentucky back in - well, let’s just say, “back in the day” - you had fewer options than students have today. After high school, you went to work for the railroad, the steel mill, or you went to college. And after college, the expectation was you got a job - staying here, or moving away. But the path was linear for those headed to college: High School -> College -> Work As the lyrics say in the Foreigner song, “That was yesterday…and yesterday’s gone.” An adult’s career and college milestones are not as likely to be 1:1 anymore. High school graduates have a foot in both worlds, as this blog post indicates. A student may go straight to work out of necessity, but could attend college to get a specific skill or credential to get a promotion. Or get a better job. On the flip side, an adult may start off in college working towards an 18-month or 2 year credential, then slide into the workforce, returning to school when they need to advance in their current job or change careers. Micro-credentials, certificates, whatever you call them at your institution, are not new, but the level of importance to adult workers is much more important because flexibility is now a requirement. This requirement places a strain on the traditional academic mindset. Now faculty and administrative leaders have to examine how macro-credentials are constructed and how can they be clustered in ways that helps students meet both their career and academic goals. And let’s not forget the other question being asked by the elephant in the room: “How does this impact our accreditation?” We’ve talked about the challenges facing workers and why they may be underemployed. Now it’s time for academic leaders to take action and consider what role the traditional academic credential structure plays in those challenges. We need to start contemplating ways higher education can transform the existing culture into something more transparent and easier to understand. One that better focuses the mindset of college graduates on #careersustainability and not just job attainment.
According to researchers, the relationship between college credentials and career advancement is not 1:1. Find out more from this weeks addition of Beyond the Classroom. https://bit.ly/3wzj1SP #HigherEducation #CareerSustainability #StudentChallenges #BeyondTheClassroom
