Six-year-old Meadow is a “happy and determined little girl who dances to the beat of her own drum,” says her mum Lauren. Meadow was born with congenital CMV after Lauren contracted the virus during pregnancy. Early diagnosis meant Meadow received prompt treatment, which helped limit the damage. Despite treatment, she faces challenges like brain abnormalities, epilepsy, hearing loss, right-sided weakness, and global developmental delay. “Research is so important. Not many people are aware of CMV and a lot of doctors are completely unaware of it,” Lauren explains. An estimated one in 150 babies are born with CMV, with most showing no symptoms. However, one in 1,000 babies in the UK will have permanent disabilities due to this infection. We're funding research to develop a low-cost screening device for early detection. If a woman is known to carry #groupBStrep in her current pregnancy, then she will be offered antibiotics from the onset of labour, which will minimise the risk of her newborn baby developing a group B Strep infection. Group B Strep is the most common cause of infection in newborn babies, causing #meningitis, #sepsis and #pneumonia. As carrying group B Strep has no symptoms, testing is the only way to determine if you are carrying the bacteria. September has been designated as Sepsis Awareness Month by Sepsis Alliance since 2011. Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to an infection. It can happen due to any infection, but the germs that most commonly trigger it are bloodstream infections, kidney infections, abdominal infections, and pneumonia. One in ten deaths associated with childbirth and pregnancy are because of maternal sepsis. It is estimated 1.2 million children and three million newborns suffer from sepsis around the year per year. Sepsis is believed to impact more than 30 million people around the world every year. Today's Lact Fact....A 2022 study from the Journal of the American Heart Association demonstrated that "Women who breastfed were less likely to develop heart disease or a stroke, or die from cardiovascular disease than women who did not breastfeed". This is a big deal for BLACK women since our leading cause of pregnancy related complications and deaths is cardiovascular disease. Breastfeeding is a health care decision, impacting long term health outcomes for both the mother and infant. It is NOT simply a feeding choice. How are you discussing infant feeding choices with Black women? Screening for Hypothyroidism While there are no universal guidelines on screening the public for thyroid disease, the American Thyroid Association recommends that screening should commence at the age of 35 and should continue every five years. 1. Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is a common but little-known virus that can infect people of all ages, but it poses particular risks to babies, especially during pregnancy. As one of the few pathogens that can cross the placenta, CMV increases risk of #birthdefects such as hearing loss or microcephaly. John Purdy, PhD, associate professor of immunobiology, strives to solve the mysteries of CMV with the hope that, someday, his findings will lead to new strategies for preventing or treating CMV infection.
