This week, a new federal rule requiring automatic emergency braking in new cars and trucks goes into effect, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA projects will save at least 360 lives a year and prevent at least 24,000 injuries annually. http://spklr.io/6040SkRY We're working with the U.S. Department of Transportation to make collaborative research on automotive #safety technologies faster, easier, and more effective with the Virtual Open Innovation Collaborative Environment for Safety (VOICES) platform. The VOICES platform was created to provide a secure, scalable, and cost-efficient way to explore novel surface #transportation concepts, allowing automakers to simulate how new automotive tools and safety features interact with other transportation technology and the environment in a digital space. http://spklr.io/6048SkRi

TTTech Auto, with a solid reputation in #ADAS and #AD market, is pivoting the company's #business and #technology focus from #autonomousdriving to #SDV. You might dismiss it as a marketing/branding ploy. I beg to differ. First, the move reflects the current thinking among European #automakers. Second, it recognizes technology suppliers can’t make money on the moribund dream of #selfdrivingcars. Then, we must ask: By redesigning an E/E vehicle architecture for #SDVs, can #OEMs speed up #automotive #innovation?

Autonomous Vehicle Safety, Embedded Software, UL 4600, Consulting, (He/him.) Personal account; likes/shares are interest and not endorsements; silence does not imply agreement.
Thoughtful take on Software Defined Vehicles from Junko Yoshida. I appreciate the intellectual honesty of Stefan Poledna / TTTech: “The adoption of Level 4 technology has been taking more time than originally anticipated.” as well as his other remarks in the article. Spot on. As discussed in the article, there is a bigger picture at work here. OEMs have the opportunity (some would say necessity) to make a generational change to their electronics and computer architecture. This is driven by a confluence of electric/hybrid vehicles and driving automation features both demanding more sophisticated computing capabilities. But there is also a business desire to recapture value add that has been slowly ceded to the supply chain over the years. However, to succeed, OEMs will need to dramatically up their software game, which is not a simple thing to pull off.

📣 Foresight Announces Follow-Up Software POC with Leading Japanese Vehicle Manufacturer🇯🇵 We're excited to announce a follow-up software proof-of-concept (POC) agreement with a leading Japanese vehicle manufacturer. This follows the successful completion of two prior POC projects. Foresight's ScaleCam™, a 3D perception solution, will be evaluated for integration into the manufacturer's existing Level 2 and Level 3 ADAS systems. The project aims to enhance existing safety features and assess the feasibility of rapid software integration. A successful POC could lead to deeper collaboration, potentially resulting in the integration of Foresight's technology into the manufacturer's mass-produced vehicles. Navigating the Future: Understanding #OperationalDesignDomains (#ODDs) in #AutomotiveAutomation Operational Design Domains (ODDs) plays a pivotal role in automotive automation. ODDs play a pivotal role in defining the conditions under which a vehicle's automated driving systems can operate safely. Each ODD is unique to the vehicle model and its specific features, reflecting varying levels of automation within a brand. Decoding #ODD Criteria: ODD criteria encompass factors such as road features, time of day, weather, and terrain. For example, a hands-free driving feature might excel during the day on a clear, straight highway but could have limitations at night, in heavy rain, or in urban settings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) employs a comprehensive taxonomy with top-level categories and subcategories to organize and identify various ODDs. #IndustryLandscape: While the NHTSA and other regulatory bodies have set standards for ODD taxonomy, there's currently no international industry-wide standard. Manufacturers and suppliers rely on their own approaches. Clearly defining the intended ODD during the design phase is crucial for suppliers to design subsystems cost-effectively. Transparent communication about these conditions enhances anticipation of potential challenges by both vehicle operators and regulators. #Differentiation and #Education: ODDs are emerging as a key differentiator in the market. Expanding the scenarios in which automated driving systems can safely operate makes vehicles more appealing. However, consumer understanding is vital. Educating users on a feature's ODD is essential to ensure it operates within intended limits and increases adoption. The Role of #HumanIntervention: Recognizing that autonomous systems may not cover every situation, drivers remain essential. Many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are integrating Level 2+ and Level 3 automation. Clearly defined ODDs provide the guidelines for when control should transition between driver and vehicle. Aptiv's advanced driver-assistance systems support the implementation of clearly defined ODDs up to Level 3 automation, emphasizing the importance of a safe and collaborative driver-vehicle relationship. Stay tuned for more insights into the evolving landscape of automotive automation! 🌐🚀 #Automotive #Innovation #ODD #OperationalDesignDomains #Automation
