Hint: It's not about Trump. What happens to a nation when the courts are used for political purposes? Law suits are brought by victims. There is no victim in this case. Only a judge with a strong political leaning. The judiciary should not be about politics. If it is, then those who hold political power will control "justice". There's a lot at stake for everyone. We might want to think about that very soon. #judicial #investors #economicdevelopment

I still cannot understand why politicians are ok with using our tax payer dollars to allow police officers to brutalize our communities. Please do not start with the "you are anti-police" nonsense. I am not. Let's start with the facts. Qualified immunity acts as a legal shield, protecting police officers from being held personally liable for their actions while on duty. While it was originally intended to safeguard officers who make reasonable mistakes, it has increasingly been used to shield them from accountability, even in cases of egregious misconduct. This article explores the importance of eliminating qualified immunity in police cases, highlighting the potential benefits it can bring for society, justice, and police-community relations. The Origins and Purpose of Qualified Immunity: Qualified immunity was established by the Supreme Court in the 1960s to strike a balance between protecting government officials, including police officers, from excessive litigation and ensuring justice for victims of constitutional violations. It aimed to shield officials who acted in good faith and within the scope of their duties from personal liability. However, over time, the interpretation and application of qualified immunity have shifted, often providing unjust protection to officers even in cases of clear misconduct. The ‘time tax’ – administrative burdens people face when accessing government services – erodes government effectiveness and trust in public institutions. It persists due to a number of factors, including the desire to safeguard services (e.g., fraud prevention), lack of user engagement and advocacy, government culture, and gaps in data and infrastructure. Do you think any of these play an outsized role in the persistence of the #TimeTax? Are there other factors?

George Santos, who has been charged by the Department of Justice with money laundering, conspiracy, wire fraud, false statements, falsification of records, aggravated identity theft, and credit card fraud, continues to collect $174,000 a year while Republicans dither about throwing him out of the House - despite confirmation by the House Ethics Committee of his considerable deceit. Why? Their "majority". Magats don't really want a functioning government as long as Biden is President. They are desperate to maintain control of the House and keep it dysfunctional, so they can point to what a "mess" everything is in and return #PO1135809 to the people's White House. Don't believe me? Take a look at this: https://lnkd.in/e_cRRBD3 Primer on how the process is SUPPOSED to work: First, a Representative sponsors a bill. The bill is then assigned to a committee for study. If released by the committee, the bill is put on a calendar to be voted on, debated or amended. If the bill passes by simple majority (218 of 435), the bill moves to the Senate. In the Senate, the bill is assigned to another committee and, if released, debated and voted on. If the Senate makes changes, the bill must return to the House for concurrence. The resulting bill returns to the House and Senate for final approval. The President then has 10 days to veto the final bill or sign it into law. If the Senate proposes a different version of a bill, a conference committee made of House and Senate members works out any differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill (reconciliation). Revenue bills MUST originate in the House. As you can see from the link above, 435 members of the House and 100 members of the Senate are each taking home about $174,000 per year (Speakers make a bit more) - about $100,000,000 for the year 2023 - having passed 23 actual bills into law - 3 or more of those explicitly for keeping the government OPEN. Why? Because Republicans DO NOT want a functioning government. Doesn't suit Magat purposes. But they want you to believe it is Biden delaying government action and governing poorly, while it is the dysfunctional House that has Congress at a near standstill. The House needs to eject Santos NOW - and we need to VOTE BLUE to thwart efforts to subvert democracy.

The Carnage in Donald Trump’s Mind July 19, 2024 Paul Krugman By Paul Krugman Opinion Columnist Donald Trump has a thing about crime. His 2017 inaugural speech was all about “American carnage,” the wave of violence he claimed was sweeping the nation’s cities. His acceptance speech last night returned repeatedly to the theme of rampant crime, supposedly rising because Latin American nations are dumping their convicts in the United States. So it comes as something of a shock to look at actual numbers on homicides — a more reliable statistic than overall violent crime, which depends to some extent on definitions. Here are the U.S. numbers for homicides per 100,000 people from Jeff Asher, with 2024’s rate an estimate based on murders so far this year: When Trump proclaimed “American carnage,” the nation had just experienced an epic decline in crime that left our cities safer than they had been in decades. There actually was a surge in crime during his last year in office, probably reflecting social disruptions caused by the pandemic, but crime has rapidly declined under Biden. At this point our cities may be as safe as they have ever been. So what is it about Trump and crime? It’s surely not about personal experience; when was the last time he saw city streets other than through the tinted glass of a limousine window? But I’m not sure it’s entirely political calculation, either. It’s hard to escape the sense that Trump wants to believe that America has been overrun by violent We can only speculate about his motives. But my guess, based on Trump’s record, from his demand that the Central Park Five face the death penalty to his interest in shooting protesters, is that Trump wants to believe in rampant crime — never mind the facts — because he wants an excuse to punish people.

I am pro a population having the right to protect itself. All freedoms come with responsibilities on both sides. An armed population can keep a government in check in several ways: Deterrence: The mere presence of an armed population acts as a deterrent against potential governmental abuses of power. When the government knows that the population is armed, it is less likely to engage in oppressive or tyrannical behavior out of fear of resistance. Resistance against tyranny: If a government becomes oppressive or tyrannical, an armed population has the means to resist and protect their rights. The ability to defend oneself against government overreach can help prevent or limit the establishment of a totalitarian regime. Balance of power: An armed population serves as a counterbalance to the government's monopoly on force. It ensures that the citizens have the means to challenge and hold the government accountable if it exceeds its authority. Protection of individual rights: An armed population empowers individuals to protect their own life, liberty, and property from not only potential government abuses but also from other external threats. This helps maintain a sense of individual liberty and personal security. Preservation of democracy: In a democratic society, an armed population can help ensure the integrity of elections and processes by providing a strong deterrent against election fraud or other attempts to subvert the will of the people. It is important to note that this perspective assumes responsible and lawful ownership of firearms, with appropriate checks and balances to prevent misuse. The intention is not to encourage violence or anarchy but rather to promote the idea that citizens should have the means to protect their individual rights and challenge an overreaching government when necessary.
