Did you know? 👉 Compared to individuals living in the city, Northern New York residents are twice as likely to die from an opioid related overdose. For organizations like ours, this is not new, and we are literally working around the clock to reverse the trend – from inpatient services to behavioral health urgent care – but additional treatment options are needed. 🚨 💡One option, a life-saving medicine considered the gold standard of treatment is non-existent in our region and faces a tangled web of state and federal regulations. In the meantime, the statistics plainly show our family, friends and neighbors continue to struggle with addiction, and the rising toll of overdose deaths. 💙Read on to learn how our region could benefit from a new approach: https://loom.ly/JOGN69A

An important read about the current landscape of opioids… thanks Vincent Lam and The Globe and Mail. Alberta is deploying an “all-of-government” approach, in which the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction collaborates directly with other relevant ministries such as housing and labour. Other provinces and the federal government should do the same. We need investment in addiction services. A big part of the work is also to integrate resources such that each step links patients to the next step in care, and ultimately back to their own lives. Right now, too many resources are like joists and beams lying haphazardly around a building site. They need to be properly assembled to support one another, and ultimately a solid house of treatment and recovery. That’s what we must offer people, if we want them to be able to move in, build a home and recognize themselves again. I couldn’t agree more! A system of care. https://lnkd.in/gEuBPYJU

The opioid epidemic is a pressing issue across Canada, affecting individuals, families, and communities. Opioid misuse leads to addiction, overdose, and death, requiring urgent action and compassionate intervention. Naloxone can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, saving lives and providing a chance for recovery. It's vital for everyone, especially in high-risk communities, to know how to use naloxone and recognize overdose signs. As an advocate for Opioid Harm Reduction, I am dedicated to educating our community about safe practices and the crucial role of naloxone. Together, we can combat the stigma associated with drug use and support recovery efforts for a healthier future. August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day. #IOAD is a global movement to raise awareness of overdose and end the stigma around drug use. This year’s theme “Recognizing those people who go unseen” acknowledges the people in our communities fighting the unseen impacts of substance use. BC Housing is committed to reducing the risks from poisoned drugs for our communities, including in community housing. Housing is the foundation to build new beginnings. Supports, like counselling, harm reduction and recovery help meet the needs of tenants. This housing also ensures tenants are connected with healthcare services, including addictions support and overdose prevention services. In British Columbia, over 12,500 people have died from the toxic drug supply since the public health emergency was first declared in 2016. Each person’s path to addiction is different. Some pathways involve pain, injuries or mental health challenges. Others may be due to intergenerational or childhood trauma. Today, we remember, without stigma, lives lost from overdose and acknowledge the grief of families and friends left behind. #StopTheStigma and learn more about #OverdoseProtection. #IOAD2023 events are happening across B.C.
