Board Member | Senior Retail Executive | Expertise spanning luxury to off-price. Senior Advisor to Retail-Wholesale & Financial Firms. Experienced in full P&L ownership. Ex-Macys/Bloomingdales senior leader.
Such an accurate account of the magic and the science of retail merchandising.
Growing up in a rural town in the UK, “where access to high fashion was completely non-existent,” Linda Ayepe sought local opportunities to explore her fascination for the fashion industry, landing her first role in a surf shop. This retail job, despite its remoteness, was formative as her “first insight into how buying works.” Ayepe went on to study fashion design and marketing in London, having tailored her studies to a career in fashion. “I did art and design, textiles, Italian, French — I wanted to work backstage at fashion shows, speaking Italian with Gianni Versace.” Through a retail recruitment agency, Ayepe landed a buying role as an admin assistant at a high street supplier for the likes of Topshop and New Look. She later went on to hold roles over the next 15 years at Net-a-Porter, Threads Styling and now currently at Harvey Nichols. Now, Ayepe shares her career advice. Read the full interview.

How would you feel if you made 369$ from just 1 client in the morning? 🔥 Besides screaming from happiness… Funny thing is, I couldn’t contain myself either when it happened. But I’m not talking about online business sales here. This happened in 1 of the jobs I had in the past. I worked as a salesperson in a fashion brand inside an outlet mall. On the same floor with Ralph Lauren, PINKO, CK, and Lacoste, among others. Despite not selling high-end fashion, Month after month, I was selling 3-digit packages. So the 369$ I mentioned wasn’t just 1 Prada hair clip. (check FARFETCH if you want) Still, it got me instant admiration from managers to coworkers. (this stroke my ego, mmkay?) Later, I had the reputation for being the go-to seller for the $$$$ parkas. P.S. 1.: This is me trying on the outfit I loved the most from the whole store. P.S. 2.: What did you learn from your past jobs? Share below 👇

On why Gucci is not Louis Vuitton Yesterday Gucci announced the recruitment of a former Prada and LV communication executive for the newly minted role of deputy CEO but no further precise details on the job description was highlighted with the exception of defining and implementing the brand strategy alongside JF Palus. This is the second recruitment from LV with a focus on brand and communication, the previous one was kept on the role for less than a year and a half. A clear point that shows how Gucci is trying to integrate some LV know how in the management. The same day WWD disclosed that LV hired the president of Wieden + Kennedy as the new head of communication. Wieden + Kennedy is an established, innovative global creative company NOT specialized in #fashion or #luxury That’s a very different move and a strategic one from Pietro Beccari. Instead of fishing into the usual fashion suspects more used to execute creative directors or CEOs brand vision, he hired for the top #luxury brand in the world a very experienced brand strategist and a head of an illustrious advertising and communication agency with a global coverage. Truly a different approach. One is chasing the market leader hiring its executives, the other one is boldy looking so much ahead. Who will win? PS in the first comment a very interesting point from a reader on Instagram What do you think?

Luxury Clash: Gucci vs. Louis Vuitton Battle for Top Talent It's thrilling to witness the chess match between luxury giants Gucci and Louis Vuitton as they strategically swap talent to gain an edge in the market. Gucci's move to recruit a seasoned LV executive for a pivotal role signals a targeted effort to adopt successful strategies from the industry leader. This suggests a calculated approach to refine their brand strategy and potentially mirror LV's market dominance. On the flip side, Louis Vuitton's unconventional choice of a brand strategist from a renowned creative agency signifies a bold departure from tradition. By embracing expertise from outside the fashion realm, LV aims to inject fresh, innovative thinking into their communication and branding. Gucci's approach may lead to refined emulation of LV's successes, leveraging insider knowledge. However, Louis Vuitton's unconventional selection could yield groundbreaking strategies that resonate deeply with evolving consumer tastes. I, for one, am staying tuned.

25 years ago today - 28th March 1999 - I landed in the UK. 19 years old, as full with optimism as my spikey fringe was full with wax Following a stint pulling pints behind a bar, somewhere deep underground on the Piccadilly Line between Covent Garden and Manor House, I ripped out an ad from the job section of The Evening Standard: Three month Christmas temp positions available at Selfridges. I arrived early for the interview, wearing a borrowed suit. There were two openings that would potentially suit me: Stationary or Ladies Eveningwear. I knew nothing about Ladies Eveningwear but also knew I did not want to be selling "Welcome to Y2K" branded pens and pencils for the next three months....I suggested Ladies Eveningwear. The interviewer agreed. What followed was a previously unthinkable 25 year career. I'm relocating back to Australia in April to start my next chapter. I've spent more time in the UK then I have in Australia. Am I heading home or leaving home? As my horoscope is bound to predict, this week I'm feeling reflective. Burberry was transformative for me: 3 years on the shopfloor followed by 11 years in Wholesale and Merchandising. Led by two amazing CEO's - Rose Marie Bravo followed by Angela Ahrendts - there was one person who I owe my career to. Michele Smith. Definitely over 5 feet tall with towering black wedges, arguably under 5 feet tall without them, she taught me Merchandising is like driving a car.....driving forward new ideas and concepts but constantly checking the data in the rear view mirror for any potential pot holes in the road. She also taught me to always appreciate retail staff, lead with empathy and that when the wedges come off in the showroom, it's time to pull your sleeves up. After a few half-hearted false starts in the past, this time feels right to head back to Australia and start the next chapter. I'm driving forward but the UK will always be in my rear view mirror.

Burberry Daniel Lee hired in 2022. In 2024 profit warning Bottega Veneta Matthew Blazy hired in 2022. 2023 revenues -5% FERRAGAMO Maximilian Davis hired in 2021. Revenues in 2023 -7,8% What is wrong with these brands? The disconnection between the collections highly pumped by the fashion press and the customers who are the real stakeholders. “Stunning collections” not repaying the salaries of the top management and putting in trouble suppliers. The solution? A brand strategy designed before recruiting the designers. Not everybody is J.W.Anderson nor M.G.Chiuri And, no, it’s not a cut and paste strategy model.
