I hope everyone had an amazing Meta Connect! It was a pleasure to host and hang out with many of the developers pioneering the future today at our classic campus. And I'm so glad we had our hybrid approach, bringing as much of Connect to developers virtually as possible with video-on-demand sessions. For Meta Quest, I hope 3 things were super clear! 1) Meta Quest 3 packs a punch: your games and apps will look, feel, and perform better than ever. Optimizing your experiences to take full advantage of the device will help you realize your creative vision and push the boundaries of what users thought was possible on standalone headsets. 2) For the first time, mixed reality is mainstream. You have the tools to build faster and more confidently, blending your content with physical space. There's an existing and growing ecosystem where we as an industry can learn about what works and the new use cases unlocked. Feels like 2016 VR all over again but with a lot more headsets out there 😎 3) Meta Quest continues to grow. Over $2B has been spent on games and apps on the Quest store and 1 in 12 titles have earned more than $10M in gross revenue. META HORIZON WORLDS BEGINS EXPANSION TO MOBILE AND WEB Meta "We’re excited to announce that Meta Horizon Worlds is beginning to expand beyond VR. We’ve started rolling out our first Meta Horizon world to mobile and web in early access, with more experiences to come. To start, a small number of people can now access Super Rumble through the Meta Quest app on Android, with iOS rolling out in the coming weeks. Early access is also available on any web browser at horizon.meta.com. As we roll out more worlds over the next few months, you’ll be able to hang out with friends, laugh it up at comedy shows, and enjoy free concerts and events from any web-connected device. Play Your Way: Expanding Beyond VR The metaverse should be available to everyone—no matter what device they’re on. And while Quest headsets are the most immersive way to access the metaverse, we believe there should be multiple entry points. Bringing Worlds to more surfaces is a step toward delivering on that vision and opening up the experience to more people. Whether you want to see when your friends are online and jump in to join them on the go, invite a friend who doesn’t have a headset to easily meet up, or otherwise share the fun, this new flatscreen version of Worlds is a great way to keep the FOMO at bay. When exploring, you should be in control of your experience—regardless of how you show up. Worlds on mobile and web has the same safety features available today in Worlds on Quest, including the protections we’ve built just for teens. We’ve also optimized several controls, including mute and pause for a more seamless experience on mobile devices and computers. Like the VR version, Meta Horizon Worlds is free on mobile and web and available to people ages 13+ in supported regions. We’re testing things out for now, so you may not have access to Worlds on mobile and web just yet. Early access will roll out to more people gradually as we gather feedback and evolve the experience. Just wanted to share some thoughts about the latest news from #Meta regarding Quest 1 developers which i received yesterday, Here’s what’s happening: ✅ You will not be able to upload builds for new apps that only support Quest 1 after April 30, 2024 ✅ Quest 1’s store won't show new apps made after this date ✅ Existing apps remain fully accessible to Quest 1 users and will continue receiving critical updates until August 2024 ✅ If you already have apps on your Quest 1, you’re all set. Meta assures us, "#Quest 1 isn’t shutting down, and users will keep full access to their apps and games" 🤔 Reading this announcement got me thinking about the journey of their headsets, so I did a little search on their release dates. It turns out, Meta Quest 1 was released in 2019. Not too long after, the Quest 2 was released in 2020. And, Meta introduced us to the Quest 3 last year. ❓ With the Quest 1 having been released in 2019 and now that we're in 2024, it appears Meta is favoring a 5-year cycle for what could be interpreted as retiring their headsets, they haven't explicitly used the term "retirement", tho. --- Curious to know your thoughts; do you think we might see something similar for the Quest 2 in 2025? Also, is a 5-year lifespan for tech hardware like this reasonable in your opinion? 🤿
