As a software engineer focused mostly in building and scaling backend systems and #infrastructure, I sometimes find it hard to stay on top of GenAI updates – from a software development perspective. For example, just recently I became aware of what LLM orchestration is and where/how it can be useful. Or learned the difference between fine-tuning and embeddings, and when to use one or the other. There are tons of industry-specific terms which are hard to know and understand how they work under the hood. GenAI is speeding up code generation, but organizations are capped by the speed they can run code through their development pipeline. If more code is entering the ‘pipes’ and you don’t invest in your pipeline infrastructure, you just pushed the bottleneck, but it’s still there. However, the solution in this economy won’t be to throw more machines and more money at the problem - organizations need to: 1. Classify the code changes that are flowing 2. Apply automation in the code approve and merge process 3. Hire and retain senior developers that can inspect code 4. Take smart decisions on CI workloads 5. Apply conditional CD Businesses and developers have to start investing in software pipeline automation. Doing so helps dev teams avoid major bottlenecks that come from trying to stream more water into the same old, narrow, rusty pipes. Will AI remove the need for software engineers? Not anytime soon, but it will affect how we work. The recent announcement of Devin, a fully autonomous AI software engineer, went viral this week. If you haven’t heard, they have an impressive demo of an AI that can resolve real-world issues on Github without assistance. It’s far from perfect (it resolves only 13.86% of issues without help), but given the current rate of progress, it’s natural to worry about whether software engineers will be replaced. Microsoft publishes a framework making developers merely supervise AI The role of developers is evolving, with artificial intelligence taking on more of the software engineering work. Microsoft recently released a research paper detailing AutoDev, an AI-driven development framework that relegates human developers to the role of supervisors. This follows Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's advice that it's not necessary for most people to learn to code anymore.
