What would be a more impactful recognition of the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the land known today as Australia. Perhaps this? “In acknowledgment that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the original and enduring custodians of the land known today as Australia, with a connection that has persisted since the beginning of Creation: 1. These peoples have always been, and continue to be, an integral part of this land, guided by their ancestral voice, story, custom, and ceremony from the Dreaming. 2. Their Original Law, as the ancestral principles, customs, practices, and societal guidelines, deeply rooted in this land, remains unbroken and coexists with the legal systems introduced later. 3. An established body, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, shall be entrusted with the responsibility of representing their interests, beliefs, and rights. 4. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice will actively engage in dialogues with the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth, addressing matters of significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 5. The structure, functions, powers, and procedures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice shall be determined solely by those who are descendants and successors of the Original Law, ensuring their traditions, rights, and voices are upheld and respected. 6. This recognition is founded on fostering mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and all other Australians, paving the way for a harmonious future that acknowledges and integrates both bodies of law.” Interested to know your thoughts…

With Rod Tiffen and Brett Hutchins, I made submission no. 16 to the Australian Senate Inquiry into Communications Legislation Amendment (Prominence and Anti-siphoning) Bill 2023. Trying to keep the public in policy. Conclusion: The Communications Legislation Amendment (Prominence and Anti-siphoning) Bill 2023 [Provisions] is not ideal from our perspective. We would prefer a bolder and more wide-ranging initiative, but acknowledge that it is the product of compromise, and that sport, while much prized by many Australians, is only one form of culture among many. Therefore, this Bill should be viewed alongside, for example, the 2023 National Cultural Policy—Revive: a place for every story, a story for every place, as a mechanism that functions to sustain social equity and cultural citizenship in an economic environment that often works to erode them through the aggressive assertion of the logic of market fundamentalism. https://lnkd.in/gSxuqSqr

Eddie Mabo profoundly changed Australia for the better by challenging and ultimately overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius, which had denied our people land rights. In a landmark 1992 decision, the High Court of Australia recognised the traditional land rights of the Meriam people of the Torres Strait, acknowledging their deep connection to their land. This judgment, known as the Mabo Decision, paved the way for subsequent land rights legislation and was a critical step toward justice and reconciliation. It is quite unbelievable that it took until just 32 years ago for such a fundamental injustice to be corrected, highlighting the enduring impact of colonialism. #MaboDecision #EddieMabo #LandRights #IndigenousAustralia #Reconciliation #TerraNullius #JusticeForFirstNations #TorresStraitIslands #MaboLegacy #AustralianHistory

Did you know this country has Australian values? High time cowardly politicians and instututional leaders started to walk the talk. Businesses and communities rely on stability and predictability to thrive. Investors, whether local entrepreneurs or external stakeholders, are acutely sensitive to the prevailing socio-political climate. In any thriving society, the assurance of safety and security is paramount. However, when threats of violence and intimidation pervade the social fabric, the repercussions extend far beyond mere fear. Such incidents not only jeopardize individual safety but also cast a long shadow over the economic landscape, our societal fabric and social cohesion. These recent events and their implications can no longer be ignored. A Merri-bek councilor received multiple death threats to influence his vote, a restaurant in Toorak facing the grim prospect of firebombing, caved to the demands, and a business subjected to racist and antisemitic attacks and death threats, closed with it's owners going into hiding. Businesses and institutions are now targeted daily by aggresive professional activists. This is Melbourne today. Don't like someone's religion or politics? Bring on the one star Google review brigade, reputational damage and online character assasinations with impunity. Want to free Palestine? Destroy every tenet of DEI and multicuturalism and join a racist zone on campus or Saturday afternoons in the CBD. Consumer confidence is at an all time low, the economy is stuffed and now we have a climate rife with threats and intimidation breeding further trepidation with consumers and investors tightening their purse strings and looking elsewhere for opportunity. So here's the list of Australian values. Do better. - respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual - freedom of religion (including the freedom not to follow a particular religion), freedom of speech, and freedom of association - commitment to the rule of law, which means that all people are subject to the law and should obey it - parliamentary democracy whereby our laws are determined by parliaments elected by the people, those laws being paramount and overriding any other inconsistent religious or secular “laws" - equality of opportunity for all people, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, race, or national or ethnic origin a 'fair go' for all that embraces: - mutual respect - tolerance -compassion for those in need - equality of opportunity for all - recognising the English language as the national language, and as an important unifying element of Australian society.
