I love seeing innovative flex policies. Smucker’s new policy outlines 22 core weeks instead of the now common weekly core days with the intent of having employees on site for 20-25% of their work time on an annual basis. I believe this is substantially more flexible than weekly core days. A similar iteration I’ve seen that sounds effective is one core week a month with attendance expected 3-4 days those core weeks but no expectation other weeks. There’s no perfect answer but I love seeing innovative companies iterate. Of course, all of these policies bring up the question about real estate efficiency but we’ll just save that conversation for another post. Let me know your thoughts below. Coronation Street Time or ‘Days of Our Lives’ Time for US Friends Many many years ago an amazing leader I had the privilege of working with shared an insight that I have held dear all my professional life This is the story …. I was working on a significant change initiative with a large UK company. One of my stakeholders was the IT Director - I happened to be in his office doing some scheduling. He invited me over to his side of the desk so I could view his monitor to make the task easier. Nearly every day an hour of his schedule was blocked out with the title ‘Coronation Street time’ Curiosity got the better of me and I had to ask ‘what is Coronation Street time?’ This was his reply….. ‘That is the most important part of my job - it’s the time I spend with my team - it’s unstructured - so I can connect with them as people not as job roles. It’s so important that I schedule it as a priority!’ That IT Director went on to be the CEO of that company. Years later I bumped into a consultant who had worked with the same company recently - all managers schedule ‘Coronation Street Time’ with their people - an amazing legacy - and yes the company in question continues to go from strength to strength #leadershipdevelopment #engagement
