With over 45,000 views, this special issue explores recent advances in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endemic mycoses. The special issue focuses on improved diagnosis via antigen detection, molecular techniques and innovations in immunosuppression treatments. Guest edited by Prof. Dr. Alessandro C. New customer research from Amsterdam UMC looking at epidemiology of recent S. pyogenes outbreak across Netherlands. Researchers assessed whether changes in S. pyogenes carriage rates and/or emergence of more virulent strains contributed to 2022/23 surge in infections. Expansion of four new toxigenic M1UK clades was observed among invasive isolates but not carriage isolates, suggesting increased virulence and fitness of M1UK compared to contemporary M1 strains. MicrobesNG supported the research with whole genome sequencing of selected emm1 isolates using our short-read service, powered by Illumina 2x250bp technology. I’m proud to be a co-author on this important manuscript, a culmination of everyone’s commitment and dedication who I worked alongside during my time at Pfizer. The article can be found at the link 🔗 below, peer-reviewed and published in the medical journal BMJ Open. Here, we detail a prospective incidence epidemiology study protocol, where active surveillance was conducted to assess the burden of Lyme disease in primary care practices in endemic areas of six European countries. This study will inform the pivotal phase III efficacy trial for Pfizer and Valneva’s investigational Lyme disease vaccine, VLA15. https://lnkd.in/e9Ysc4vE

Great to see our review published on NTM pulmonary disease Epidemiology, diagnosis and multidisciplinary management. https://lnkd.in/eA_dkgbN Kartik Kumar Onn Min Kon Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental organisms that can cause significant disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. The incidence of NTM pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is rising globally. Diagnostic challenges persist and treatment efficacy is variable. This article provides an overview of NTM-PD for clinicians. We discuss how common it is, who is at risk, how it is diagnosed and the multidisciplinary approach to its clinical management.

#editorchoice 📢 #Hepatitis E Virus in #Finland: #Epidemiology and Risk in Blood Donors and in the General Population 👨🎓 by Jaana Mättö et al. 🔗 Full article: https://lnkd.in/d-KZ3GpG The aim of the study was to determine the #HEV epidemiology and risk in the Finnish blood donor population. In conclusion, the results indicate that the risk of transfusion-transmitted HEV (HEV TTI) in Finland is low. However, continuous follow-up of the HEV epidemiology in relation to the transfusion risk landscape in Finland is necessary, as well as promoting awareness in the medical community of the small risk for HEV TTI, especially for immunocompromised patients. 👉 This article belongs to the Special Issue: #Transfusion-Transmissible Infections and Epidemiological Surveillance https://lnkd.in/guAH3SgY

Wastewater-Based Epidemiology for Tracking Bacterial Diversity and Antibiotic Resistance in COVID-19 Isolation Hospitals in Qatar Hospitals are hotspots for antimicrobial-resistant genes (ARG) and play a significant role in their emergence and spread. Large numbers of these ARGs will be ejected from hospitals via wastewater systems. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been consolidated as a tool to provide real-time information and a promising approach to understanding the prevalence of bacteria and ARGs at a community level.
