What is life like as a charity fundraiser in 2024 ❓ 🎢 Well. Let me tell you. It's a wild ride. The non-profit landscape is tougher than ever. According to the latest Charity Commission annual report, there are 168,893 charities on the register for the year 2022-23. Many worthwhile causes requiring a lot of support. There are hoops to jump through out of your control: ❌your income is too high ❌your reach is too low ❌your beneficiaries are too young ❌your volunteer programme is too tricky ❌we love what you do but we've just partnered with Sally's mum's friend's dog rescue centre... But maybe it's the ex-teacher in me. This stuff NEVER puts me off. In fact, it makes me more determined than ever to make a difference for the children we serve. After a few weeks of hitting brick wall after brick wall, Monday brought the most unexpected, substantial donation from a wonderful supporter of The Country Trust ✅ Their words, "The work you do is imperative and we are delighted to support it." These words will fuel my fundraising tank with hope, optimism and belief through the next few months. So hang on in there. Enjoy the white knuckle ride. So excited for Blackmores Charity Drive this Friday! Can't wait to help these great causes & also promote sustainability & the importance to reuse as much as possible. As a member of the Blackmores Sustainability Committee (& resident hippie!) it is important we are continually driving to align our actions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Rising food costs have made it challenging for people to feed themselves and as a result has stretched many charitable food organizations thin. Our goal with our newly named Food Security Campaign is to help these organizations nourish communities in need. AskingBristol's ambition is to show how to #levelup the #thirdsector in a #city or #region. Greater #Bristol has over 4000 registered #charities, but it also has thousands of smaller community and voluntary groups that are a backbone of the #City providing help and support in every way imaginable. AskingBristol works with four types of ask: Things, Time, Expertise and Services. The approach to Things is "MultiVarious Giving" - the idea that if an individual or a business or an organization or a foundation has annual charitable giving, then a part of that giving could be treated differently with MultiVarious Giving. That portion of the annual giving can be divided into smaller amounts and given, generally with a chosen theme each year, to buy specific Things for any charity or voluntary/community group. This approach has been pioneered with the #HighSheriff of Bristol's Fund (BYCA - Bristol Youth and Community Action) and Bristol Curry Club (see previous posts). Progress will only be made once organizations and businesses and individuals and foundations see the power of this approach to level up across the region and support every charity and voluntary/community group according to their needs. And of course the smaller the group, generally the smaller the ask they are making. The High Sheriff of Bristol's Fund showed how £200 or £300 could make all the difference. I am delighted to say that Burges Salmon LLP is the first business in Bristol to try this approach with us and this story about slow cookers in #BartonHill is a wonderful example of one such targeted gift. We had the invaluable support of Kalpna Woolf and Natalie Ward of 91 Ways whose experience of running slow cookers sessions ensured the success of the afternoon. Many thanks to Tom Foley and the Barton Hill Amateur Boxing Club for hosting the event and for bringing ten families from the community to participate. Many thanks also to Uncle Paul's Chilli Charity for offering sets of their award-winning sauces and chutneys for each family to take away with their slow cooker and recipe book. This is a fantastic example of MultiVarious Giving in action. It is clear that scaling up to the likely 10,000s of Things asks a year in Greater Bristol is possible - Bristol has the capacity. However it would require a significant rethink from businesses and organizations and individuals and foundations to achieve that scale. Burges Salmon have demonstrated how to do it.
