Endeavor's research team studied the careers of 200 founders leading $1+ billion companies, 100 in the US and 100 in emerging markets around the world. We aimed to understand how their experiences led them to build such immensely successful companies. Career Update: 🌱 Reflecting on a decade in the training industry, I'm grateful for the journey and the extraordinary participants I've had the privilege to interact with. Training is more than a profession; it's a passion close to my heart. The constant quest of "What's next?" and "How can we innovate?" has always propelled me forward. Through engaging with numerous inspiring founders, a clear path has emerged, guided by the weak signals that whisper of change and the courage required to pivot.   I am excited to announce the expansion of our venture, White Oak. An investment arm through which I'll collaborate with visionary founders to create an ecosystem in the financial education industry that helps Simplify, Empower, and Endure – Our Vision. We aim to partner with training firms and financial institutions to co-create transformative solutions in the ed-tech space.   🦷 Parallel to this, my commitment to the dental business continues unabated. With a focus on expansion through roll-ups, we are fortunate to have secured the financial backing of an incredible group of family and friends. Their unwavering trust and support fuel our ambition and constantly remind us of the power of community.   🚀 As we step into 2024, the excitement for what's ahead is palpable. Is the University you go important to being a founder of a $1bn unicorn? - according to Endeavor Ireland, who studied 100 of the highest valuation Unicorns in the US and 100 from the rest of the world, it is NOT. Over 60% did do a science or engineering degree though. Only 1/3 completed a degree from a world top 100 Uni. Only 20% worked for an elite company previously - a top 3 consulting, top 5 tech or bulge bank BUT 80% were former employees of a high growth business or had founded a previous high growth business. The average time post degree before going on to build a Unicorn was 10 years. It takes time and clearly working for a high growth business is a good route to success here! The high growth sector is such an important driver of UK growth and now shown to be a fantastic producer of Unicorns. Its hard for seed stage founders to stomach giving away 35% and STILL be in the wild. Its usually after Seed that you realise: 📢 Capital efficiency = offense and defence. 1. Offense to build a sustainable business 2. Defence from l͟e͟a͟k͟i͟n͟g͟ ownership Because, In the absence of valuation going up, you really are leaking it away. After all, What is the point of working so hard... If it becomes uninteresting to you JUST as things begin to get good? If you truly know your business and its potential... work BACKWARDS. Where will I exit? How much will I own when I do? If today that means - It's looking questionable? Pause & Re-adjust. Otherwise, you will sleep walk into a wall. [DAY 2/50] Hi there 👋🏼 I on a 50-day series as a Deep Tech Investor at VSC Ventures where I share my learnings from fellow investors, founders and technologists. 🚀 At VSC Ventures, we invest in pre-seed stage to Series A solutions at the intersection of Industrial Automation & Climate! If you're building in the space or just want to chat about it, reach out directly at dimple at vscventures.com. ⏱️ Day 2 consisted of mostly heads down work going through ~100 deals that Vidush Jaipuria and the rest of the team have sourced over the past couple of months. This includes me getting up to speed on industries and gauging whether or not a product/service fits our investment criteria + has the potential to give us high returns. 💡 Today's highlight was getting to know the other interns on the PR side of VSC! Grace Wharton, Valentina Solci, and Claire-Emma Britt all doing amazing things for our PR clients! 💭 Key learnings today: - Founders ➡️ communicating regularly, even if briefly with small, frequent updates is extremely important to keep your investors engaged. Remember: investors are more than your cheerleaders. You can take your time to report successes but come immediately with problems! - Investors ➡️ Growing channels for deal sourcing can look different for everyone. Some avenues that work for me: being vocal online & offline about our investment thesis, building relationships with early founders and co-investors, and showing up at demo days and other events near me. Where do unicorns come from? 🦄 Endeavor studied the career journeys of 200 founding teams and found that: 🏆 80% didn’t previously work for an elite employer 🧑🏽🎓66% got a degree from a university that isn’t in the top 100 on the QS World University Rankings 🚀 50% had previous experience working at a startup/scale up 🌎 founding teams in emerging markets are more likely to tackle real world problems vs build for VC fads Great founders look like anyone and come from anywhere.
