British historian, clergyman, and professor Charles Kingsley once said, "There are two freedoms – the false, where a man is free to do what he likes; the true, where he is free to do what he ought." This quote captures the distinction between the liberty to act on any impulse and the moral freedom that involves acting responsibly and ethically. Today, we celebrate the bold vision of our founders who dared to dream of a nation built on freedom and self-governance. As we honor their legacy, let's remember that true patriotism means holding our nation accountable to its highest ideals. We must challenge ourselves, and each other, to strive for a more perfect union—with liberty and justice for all. Our differences, when dealt with properly, are our strength, and our shared commitment to democracy is what makes America exceptional. This 4th of July, let's pledge to not just celebrate our freedoms, but to actively protect and expand them. We must ensure that the American dream remains alive for future generations. Happy July 2nd! This is actually the day on which the United States became independent. The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing independence that was moved by Richard Henry Lee. It read in part: “Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” Another part of the resolution directed that a Declaration of Independence be issued. #july2 #1776 #independenceday #RichardHenryLee #DeclarationofIndependence #july4

Hi LinkedIn! I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! If you're a history buff, you'll find this interesting... Harford County, where I'm from in Maryland penned our country's first Declaration of Independence known as the Bush Declaration. This was in March 1775, to document their support of Boston and opposition to British control. The Bush Declaration contributed to the format and premise of the well-known United States Declaration of Independence that we celebrate every July 4th. Freedom is never quite free, as noted by the ending statement of the declaration, "At the risque of our lives and fortunes." More can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eavnmegs
