Today, June 11th, marks the very first International Day of Play! Play isn't just about having fun (though that is important), it's a critical part of child development. In fact, my sister, a long time early childhood teacher, teacher, would often tell me that children's work is play. This is where they learn how to communicate, share, work collaboratively, and regulate emotions. As children grow older, they learn how to persevere, work towards goals, how to be a leader, and learn empathy. Of course, play is also good for physical health as well as emotional. However, too many children are deprived of their childhood and this fundamental aspect of their development. They don't get a chance to develop these skills and to form strong relationships with others through safe play. All children have a right to childhood and a right to safe spaces to play. On this first International Day of Play, UNICEF and UNESCO call on governments around the world to prioritize four SDG-related outcomes that contribute to this right and support progress towards SDG target (Read more here about the four actions here: https://lnkd.in/ePmVU8ZP),

Let's Celebrate! It's the first International Day of Play! June 11th, 2024 marks the very first International Day of Play, a day dedicated to celebrating the power of play in all our lives, but especially for children. Play isn't just about having a good time. It's fundamental to a child's development. Play heals through learning, life skills and psychosocial well-being. That’s why there must be investment into diverse, inclusive and safe play spaces, extending access to all, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised children. Through play, children: · Learn and grow intellectually · Build social skills and make friends · Develop resilience and emotional well-being · Explore their creativity and imagination · Stay healthy and active What can we do: ü Organize a game day in your neighborhood park or backyard. ü Talk to friends, family, and educators about the importance of play in children's lives. ü Use social media to create awareness towards the benefit of play for children. #We want a world where every child’s right to play is respected, protected and fulfilled.

Playing is a creative process in which we create a "possibility space" by embracing and incorporating limitations and challenges into a dynamic and playful worldview. It’s about not always trying to control the situation but accepting an uncertain course and outcome. Here are two examples. “We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” – George Bernard Shaw. Children who play make-believe transform their environment into a natural part of their game. Two chairs become a train. If a well-meaning parent rationally removes the unnecessary elements and sets the rules in black and white, the play might die, and the magic will disappear. “Playing a game is the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles.” – Bernard Suits. In play, we challenge ourselves to improve by deliberately and voluntarily placing ourselves in vulnerable positions or imposing impossible rules. The uncontrolled experience that arises from this is not called 'stress' in the safe context of play but 'fun.' This is why soccer players become so skilled at manipulating a leather ball with their feet. The rule is not to touch the ball with their hands. Making things hard can be fun. Some last thoughts: How will this change in an era where AI increasingly serves everything on a silver platter? Are we becoming lazy? How do we continue to stimulate our brains with new challenges? How do we seek out the struggle that leads to creative thoughts and new neural connections? Challenge yourself. Let go of assumptions. Fantasize. Take a different path than you normally would. Today we get to celebrate the inaugural International Day of Play! 🤸 The United Nations General Assembly got together and made the 11th of June the International Day of Play - because they believe (and so do we) that every child can reach their full potential, with the time, space and access to play. 97% of children believe play is important yet one in three do not have the time to play. To change this, children are asking adults and decision-makers to: • Invest in children’s well-being by protecting their right to play. • Provide children with more time and opportunities to play, including in school. • Protect their right to play by creating safe and accessible places to play, including for those with special needs. • Respect their rights to be heard in decisions impacting their right to play. • Support them in developing social skills through play.
