From Introvert to Young Entrepreneur: My Journey to Speaking with Great Personalities Growing up, I was a complete introvert for 7 years in school, often finding solace in books and ideas rather than conversations. The thought of speaking publicly or meeting influential figures alone seemed daunting. Yet, today, I stand as the youngest entrepreneur, having had the privilege to speak with and learn from some of the greatest personalities in the business world. The journey wasn't easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. Here are a few steps that helped me along the way: 1. Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: I realized that growth begins at the edge of our comfort zones. I started small, engaging in conversations and participating in group discussions. 2. Continuous Learning: I consumed content that motivated and educated me. Reading books, attending webinars, and listening to podcasts helped me gain knowledge and confidence. 3. Networking: I reached out to mentors and like-minded individuals. Their guidance and support were invaluable. 4. Preparation: For every meeting or speaking opportunity, I prepared meticulously. This preparation boosted my confidence and helped me articulate my thoughts clearly. 5. Embracing Challenges: Every challenge was a learning opportunity. I embraced failures and learned from them, which only made me stronger. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for every experience that shaped me. From being a reserved introvert to speaking with industry leaders, I've come a long way. 🚨 Trigger warning: More and more I am seeing people spouting knowledge, yet they are not able to apply what they claim to know as a skill. I have been working in the speaking, training and entertainment industry for nearly 15 years and have only become comfortable claiming myself as an expert in the last 5/6, it has taken me tens of thousands of conversations, performances, business meetings etc, to know that what I say I do works. Knowledge is undoubtedly powerful, but its true value is unlocked only when it's applied. The gap between knowing something and being able to do it effectively is where many potential breakthroughs get lost. Understanding a concept is one thing; translating that understanding into real world results is another. The point I am trying to make is, in a world of self claimed experts be careful who you take advice from. Controversial opinion - "Extroverts are not born as good public speakers.. debunk this myth; not every extrovert can storytell."... I said to a PR contact this morning There is a misconception that extroverts are great public speakers because they are "social" or can be in "people" first settings. This isn't true. As an extrovert, I could not self-promote up the career ladder, present confidently at work or deliver a presentation to more than ten people ... why? Because I needed to gain the skills or practice. These life skills aren't taught in school but assessed in real life ... Yes, I could start a conversation with someone without much hesitation - but what's that to say it added value? Public speaking is more than standing in front of a crowd and saying something ... it's knowing your audience, understanding the challenges and adapting to deliver a solution. Whether introverted or extroverted, you can be an excellent public speaker - if you align your passions with skills, knowledge and practice... no one is born a great public speaker. Extroverts might be naturally good at starting a conversation, but introverts can go into depth. Still, great public speakers always work to level up constantly. In the last five years, I have delivered 2 TED talks, 100+ presentations, and 50+ keynotes, hosted a BBC show and YouTube talk show, live streamed from large tech conferences, interviewed government officials, ministers and ... across 24 countries ... and before each moment, I am practising in front of the mirror, reading up on recent trends, recording videos to critic and asking for feedback. This is accelerating progress. This is building on skills. This is practice.
