I recently came across this fascinating image of a refrigerator innovatively built out of mud. It's a unique blend of traditional materials and modern functionality, demonstrating how innovation can come from the simplest and most unexpected sources. Whether AI-generated or not, this concept reminds us that creativity knows no bounds. Innovation isn't always about high-tech solutions; sometimes, it's about reimagining the ordinary in extraordinary ways. #Innovation #Creativity #SustainableDesign

What is innovation? When I at the IFA Berlin exhibition the other day, go through all the big brands and small startups, to asking for their product details, when actually using the product or watching the tutorials. One question always spinning in my head? McKinsey defines it as “Innovation is the systematic practice of developing and marketing breakthrough products and services for adoption by customers.” But the customers ask so many things, what exactly does that mean? Does the invention of a new product to detect landslides a innovation? Does using a more durable material in the dishwasher a innovation? Does change the refrigerator door to transparent a innovation? Does making the headphones cheaper a innovation? Does reduction of the TV by 0.5 cm a innovation? Does adjust the washing machine interface panel a innovation? … If they are all innovation, are they all equal? What’s the difference? What is the innovation we should pursue? What, what, what… And the most important question, am I innovating? #innovation #design #sustainability

I help leaders wrestling with the energy transition to put their innovation dollars to work more effectively
Timing the launch of innovation ideas is a bit like picking the moment to eat an avocado… almost impossible to get right. Pro-tip: the timing of some of these shifts isn’t in your control, but being too early is better than being too late. The trick is to think about how can you make an innovation more valuable to your organisation in the short term? Think of your executives as customers? What are their needs, and how can you meet them? Otherwise, if they don’t understand the value, it will be too late for your avocado.

I was struck on a recent trip as to how much more convenient it has become to travel thanks to rolling luggage. Within a relatively short period of time it has become almost universally adopted throughout the world. And yet, unlike most other consumer products/services, it was an insanely simple idea that did not require any technological breakthrough and/or material upfront investment. I wonder what the next such innovation will be! #innovation #consumergoods

We're often asked about the benefits of early innovation processes. One of them is that it helps ensure that all teams are on the same page regarding the definition of the problem. This is crucial for accountability in the subsequent stages of the process. Only then can each team member understand what is required to contribute to a successful solution. For example, when developing the next generation of Fischer Sports ski boots for kids, we first agreed on the problems we were trying to solve. Through our design research, we discovered three key areas that were crucial to the user but were not being addressed by the competition: - the ski boots for kids were too heavy, - they weren't waterproof enough, and - children couldn't fasten their buckles independently. This also helped us establish clear metrics for the project: - to reduce the weight, - minimising snow or water that enters the boot and - minimize the time it takes to fasten the buckles.
