WWDC24 Keynote is in the bag. Let’s see how we did at Emergent AI with our predictions. 1. Apple Intelligence: It is “AI for the rest of us” and is sprinkled across all the platforms and OS. Interesting to note that Apple is launching this in Beta (is that a first for Apple?!). It will be available on new iOS & MacOS on iPhone 15 Pro and iPad and Macs with M1 and later. On the upgrade front, new iPhones but your existing M1 or later Mac or iPad will benefit from Apple Intelligence. 2. Privacy-safe LLMs: A hybrid on-device and cloud model is coming. A foundation model with adapters for on-device performance with the ability to run larger models in the cloud with “Private Cloud Compute” approach. This is not “Apple Simple” nor is it the privacy-safe LLM that we were speculating about. In addition, to make things more open, for some of the popular LLMs (Whisper, Llama, StableDiffusion, etc), there will be support in CoreML to convert these models for use on device and optimization.  3. Xcode Copilot: Well, it’s going to be called “Swift Assist”, as Copilot is a Microsoft trademark. Regardless, it walks and talks like a copilot that we’ve been using. Alas, no ScarJo for Siri but Siri is connecting with ChatGPT. Apple suggests they will allow other chatbots in the future. Who knows this could be the beginning of another juicy Services revenue stream by having OpenAI, Google, and others bid for the privilege of being the default chatbot for Apple’s devices? Stay tuned, as the future of AI at Apple just got a lot more complicated and interesting. For Apple historians, this complexity feels like the time that Apple shipped MacOS on both Motorola and Intel chips until everything got cleaned up (by Steve Jobs, of course) with OS X on Intel. Here we are again and perhaps Tim Cook has set the stage for a future CEO to simplify and rationalize.

"Apple will kick off its weeklong Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) event with the customary keynote at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT on June 10. The presentation will focus on the company’s software offerings and the developers that power them, including the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS. You can watch the stream over on Apple’s events page. There’s a stream on YouTube as well, but that has a tendency to lag a bit. Over the past couple of years, critics have noted that the company has thus far been falling behind the likes of Google, Microsoft and OpenAI when it comes to generative AI research. CEO Tim Cook has promised to address that concern for some time now, and there’s no better time and place than at Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino during WWDC. Rumors currently point to a potential deal with GPT-developer OpenAI, aimed at leveling the playing field a bit. The latest reports have put a name to Apple’s AI efforts: Apple Intelligence, along with the caveat that not all recent Apple devices will be able to use the new system. Apple's #WWDC announcements have dropped. As expected, there was a lot of AI sprinkled across the new software platforms. Here are some take-aways: - Apple Intelligence works across apps and provides a lot of small contextual AI features relying on your personal messages, photos, calendar and email. - There is an interesting mix of on-device processing and "verifiably private" cloud computing for access to larger models. - Siri will get smarter with voice and text input and provides a free ChatGPT 4o access. - As it stands, the iPhone 15 Pro is the only phone that gets access, but all the M-series Mac and iPad devices are enabled. - Another limitation is a restriction to US English for the first release this fall, more languages are coming in 2025. There is still a lot to learn, but it's definitely a unique approach to system-level AI integration.

with the announcement of the Rabbit " companion" we now move toward the vision of embodied AI that I foresaw 14 years ago. In my post I predicted it would be a "better pattern matching" aglo (today's LLM's) that would form the heart of this device. in my thinking the most ready platform to embody this was already in our pockets though vastly simplified in 2012, the smart phone. Google : Android Gemini. hint hint. let the model control the hardware directly and subsume the apps. let us talk to and touch the device to teach it and you'll lead this new embodied agent space.
