Etsy launched an ad campaign spotlighting sellers, part of a new “brand mission” addressing the rise of automation and mass production as threats to the hand-crafted goods the e-commerce platform was built on:

Early week shout-out to Etsy. I thought a lot of their Super Bowl-related work was clever, but it may have also zoomed too far in and leaned too heavily on Etsy fans or the brand-familiar. Their latest spot created with Orchard feels almost like a throwback, in a good way. It's back to the roots of the platform and its purveyors. It features the makers. It hammers home handmade. And, yes, it leans into and against the assault of AI and the machines. It's a convenient foil, but it works quite well in this context for this brand. For those that follow me, I come back again and again to the notion of simplicity. This spot, and the related efforts tied to the "Keep Commerce Human" tagline, follow that script to strong effect. #marketing #advertising #brandmarketing #marketingcommunications https://lnkd.in/e5m6WfiJ

A bunch of things need to go right for this team but the support they’ve managed to get is impressive. It will be interesting to see if they can keep growing searches and usage + which categories they tackle next. As a consumer, I think the problem is a relevant one especially in the furniture/homeware category, where items are searched more often by physical characteristics than by brand name. What do you think? Appreciate my friend Adii Pienaar’s comments and insights in the article too. Deft is a company I’m invested in via a fund and an SPV. #ecommerce

👌 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝟒 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 👌 Optimizing images is a crucial but often overlooked step that can slow down your website speed and increase bounce rates. Here are 4 steps you can implement to effectively optimize your images: 🔍 Step 1: Use Image Compression Tools Compress your images using tools like JPEGmini, TinyPNG, or Kraken.io to reduce their file size, improving your website loading speed. 🔍 Step 2: Optimize File Names with Keywords Give your image files descriptive names instead of generic names like "Image_1". For example, if you're posting a picture of a necklace, name the file "Necklace". 🔍 Step 3: Optimize Alt Text Describe your image accurately and concisely in the alt text, avoiding keyword stuffing. For example, "Man putting a laptop into a brown leather briefcase" effectively describes the image and highlights the product's function. 🔍 Step 4: Run A/B Tests on Images Customer behavior changes, so consistently test your images. If a product isn't selling despite traffic, the image might not be engaging enough. 👉 Here are some A/B testing ideas: - Test customer feedback images: See if showcasing customer photos using the product increases conversions. - Test different lighting: Compare natural light with artificial light to see which performs better. - Test the number of images: Adjust the number of product images on your page, experimenting with more or fewer. ✨ Optimizing product images effectively not only improves page speed but also attracts organic traffic. While I do think that AI-generated products are a potential issue, Etsy has a way bigger problem. Their fee structure incentivizes the 'race to the bottom' while pushing *actual* creators to inflate their prices to accommodate. If you don't know, I make and sell candles (Pathfinder Goods). I also have had a niche print-on-demand store on Etsy for 5+ years. At $19 per candle, Etsy's base fees amount to $2.25. However, if your sale comes in through an offsite Etsy ad, that fee jumps up to 12% of the sale, and is now $4.50. You don't have to opt in to that. Even with discounted shipping, most shipments cost me about $8 door-to-door in the US. But here's the thing: Etsy dings your listings and your store if you don't offer free shipping. So if I offer free shipping, I'm down to $6.50 for material cost. All in, I might net a dollar on my handmade item, or $3 if the sale wasn't from offsite ads. This doesn't matter to you nearly as much if you're operating on volume, like you might be if you were simply sourcing products from Alibaba, which nearly anyone can figure out how to do in a weekend on YouTube or Tiktok or Reddit. I'm not even factoring in the on-platform or off-platform advertising you might be spending on (or competing against), nor the cost of your time, photos, or other listing assets. Is the value of Etsy as a marketplace with a built-in audience worth it to begin with, not even counting the AI slop they're focused on? To me, the answer is no.

Humans or Machine? That's what Etsy wants to know. The company has addressed #AI anxiety among #creatives head-on, and is angling to get back to its roots as a home for #artisans. In the last year, #Etsy removed four times the number of listings that violated its #handmade policy compared to the previous year. In an effort to better differentiate from #ecommerce giants like Amazon and Temu, they have released a new set of “Creativity Standards” that requires sellers to classify items with clear labels that state the level of “human involvement” that went into the product. Etsy acknowledges the inevitable advancement and incorporation of #AItools into the #creativeprocess, including editing software, however CEO Josh Silverman reassured investors and sellers about Etsy’s commitment to keeping “commerce human". In a new ad campaign, created with the agency Orchard, Etsy is openly skeptical of what automation can accomplish. “In an increasingly automated world, Etsy stands for something different,” said David Kolbusz, CCO at Orchard. “Our film isn’t anti-tech, it’s pro-human. It’s a reminder that the things that arrive on your doorstep can come from someplace more meaningful than a fulfillment center.” #ainews #technews #tech #emergingtech

Etsy to classify all listings into one of four new categories: Made by a seller: Physical items #crafted, altered, or assembled by a seller, by hand or using tools they own (e.g., a #3Drinter or Cricut machine) Designed by a seller: Original #designs by a seller (or seller-prompted AI art) offered as a digital download or produced/printed by a third-party Sourced by a seller: Items that enable buyer creativity, such as #craft supplies, party decorations, and items buyers can personalise and print on demand Handpicked by a seller: #Vintage items, items from nature, and certain collections of items selected/curated by a seller #marketplaces #ecommerce
