Local governments in California are making an effort to improve engagement with community, but there are still many challenges to this. That's why at the foundation, we support work that aligns systems with community priorities.  In this month's newsletter, we highlight some of the innovative work happening to center community voices. Did you catch the WKYC news segment featuring a community health worker (CHW), Fonda McLaine, and her client, Nadine Head, discussing "Addressing Cardiometabolic Health Inequities by Early Prevention in the Great Lakes Region" (ACHIEVE GreatER)? This research project, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is a multi-stakeholder partnership among Better Health Partnership, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, Wayne State University and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), operating in both Cleveland and Detroit. The goal of ACHIEVE GreatER is to reduce cardiovascular complications and hospitalizations for Black patients living in public housing, and who are at risk of heart disease, by improving blood pressure, lipid, and glucose targets. The project, which seeks to determine the impact grassroots efforts can have to address cardiovascular health disparities, pays for community health workers, nurses and care coordinators to work with clients living in CMHA units and coordinate their care with clinical providers and other community resources. Better Health Partnership (BHP) is partnering with University Hospitals to offer a sustainable model for funding CHWs beyond the 5-year grant cycle via the Better Health Pathways HUB. We asked Mr. Woodruff about what made him join COAST, his vision of COAST's larger mission, and what he hopes other MFTs will find by joining COAST. [Mr. Woodruff] I got involved with COAST after the by-laws change as I was (and am) concerned about state-level information and advocacy for our profession when the existing state organizations were unsupported or taxed out of existence. 2.   Describe COAST's mission in a way that feels meaningful to you. [Mr. Woodruff] The mission of COAST is to ensure a place for emerging and existing systemic therapists to go for networking, information, advocacy, and support with state and local-level knowledge and insight. 3.   What would you like future COAST members to find in COAST? [Mr. Woodruff] I would like members to find a welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable home to support folks in their work as systemic therapy professionals. 4.   What's one good reason more MFTs should consider joining COAST? [Mr. Woodruff] COAST remains focused on the day-to-day needs of systemic therapy professionals and students as we, as a distinct minority in numbers and theory, advance the value and visibility of our profession. #mft #systemictherapy #systemictherapists

Communication, advocacy, and even history-taking are all behaviors engrained in the EMS provider. In fact, we can all think of an educator, preceptor, or partner who helped teach and role-model these skills. Because these behaviors reflect our training, they are also open to bias based on our different lived experiences.
