CEO and Executive Director at The Permanente Medical Group

It’s an exciting time to embrace the explosion of generative AI, which can create original content, and imagery. This technology will be an absolute game changer, bringing efficiencies we have never seen before. This article and fresh data from McKinsey & Company outlines some of the emerging use cases for health care and potential to “affect everything from continuity of care to clinical operations and contracting.”   At The Permanente Medical Group, Inc., our history is deeply rooted in innovation. It’s in our DNA. We have many initiatives, industry partnerships, and AI projects in place. And we continue to pilot new technologies with the goal of reducing and eliminating waste and creating better opportunities to deliver the highest levels of service and care to patients while providing our people with the support they need to do their best work. AI gives us the potential to automate stressors and reduce clerical burdens that have long plagued our industry. I am also excited about using this technology to help patients with disease self management. We are just scratching the surface on this next frontier of health care. Experts in their field at TPMG and across the industry are learning more about how we can enhance the patient and clinician experience like never before. Our relentless commitment to doing what’s best for our patients, physicians and care teams is the foundation of TPMG’s innovation strategy.

Generative AI is exciting to me, as well. When we discuss it in our office, we talk about how it can remove (and improve) some of the day-to-day work that gets tedious, but remains important to our contract negotiation results. That bit of additional freedom will enable us to add more value through our experience and knowledge. Perhaps, more importantly, it will provide more time for us to build and maintain relationships which are critical to our long-term success.

Dr. Ansari's enthusiasm for the potential of generative AI in healthcare is both timely and inspiring. While it's true that the promise of AI in healthcare has been discussed for some time, we must recognize that technology evolves, and breakthroughs do occur. The advancements we've witnessed in generative AI, as demonstrated in the McKinsey report, open up exciting possibilities for the healthcare industry. As we've seen, generative AI, powered by technologies like GPT-4, has the potential to streamline administrative tasks, reduce physician burdens, and improve the quality of care provided to patients. In an era where healthcare systems are constantly under pressure to do more with less, the application of generative AI represents a significant opportunity to optimize our operations and enhance patient experiences. While it's true that electronic health records were groundbreaking in their time, we shouldn't shy away from embracing new technologies like generative AI. These innovations can build upon the foundation of electronic records and take healthcare to the next level. Patient data security is undoubtedly a concern, but it's a challenge that can be addressed with robust safeguards and protocols.

Haven't people been saying this about AI and healthcare for 10 years with almost no real progress in changing healthcare for most people? Are we going to skip over the failed implementation of discriminative AI hype and just jump to generative AI hype? Healthcare is just finally getting settled with electronic records which was cutting edge technology in the 1970s. Time to look into 1980s tech first to see what to do now.

Extremely well put! Exciting times and opportunities ahead with the further democratization of AI in the form of Generative AI. I particularly loved the reference to using AI to reduce stressors and administrative burdens for our care givers, so they can even better focus on whats most important - quality care for our our patients and health service consumers at large.
