As we look to the year ahead, our Executive Headteacher shares his thoughts on how online provision can support attendance for those that struggle with the transition back into the school routine. #Schoolattendance #OnlineEducation #AlternativeProvision Susan Tooze, Paula Reynolds, Humza Nazir
Executive Head of Academy21, an Inspired Online School. Academy21 is the UK's leading online alternative provision and a Department for Education accredited online school.
School attendance is in the spotlight this week - rightly so. As schools return, we know absence will be a real challenge. The reality is some young people require something different. Many schools recognise this and work in partnership with an online alternative provision like Academy21 to provide an inclusive, flexible, quality option for their students. Yes, online is different – but so are young people. This difference is a strength. Online won’t be the answer for every student who is struggling to be in lessons but it will be for many. Indeed, at Academy21 we are proud to already be improving attendance and outcomes for young people in hundreds of schools across the UK. Perhaps it is a hangover from the pandemic but it feels as though policy is yet to fully embrace the benefits of online that so many schools already see for some students - improved engagement, high academic standards, and flexible bridge between school and child that allows young people to transition back into physical school or onto the next stage of their journey. Why does online work? - It gives anxious students a secure environment away from the bustle of a 30+ classroom, stripping away worry that contributes to low attendance. - An online school that can provide a full curriculum delivered live, such as Academy 21, means students receive a quality education and can transition back into classrooms often more readily than from other settings. - Online offers more flexibility with timetabling, a consistency in teaching and effective safeguarding so all young people are supported and schools can monitor. - Finally, it is purpose built. We have an experience that is adapted for learners in a way pandemic provision could not. This means everything from our purpose-built platform that allows students to access classrooms and receive feedback seamlessly through to varied means of participation so students can access the same quality learning in different ways. Online AP taps into the brilliance and skills our young people already possess. Their interactions, social lives and interests are already led in part online, they are comfortable in online spaces. It is certainly time to look at how we as a sector can really use online schooling as part of the package to tackle those root causes that cause students to miss learning.

The School Librarian- Your Ultimate Digital Resource - Doug Johnson, 2019. "Supporting enhanced learning opportunities with digital resources isn't necessarily a new role for school librarians, but this role is growing in importance—rapidly (so it's essential that librarians keep current on trends in ed tech through their own professional development). Whether they're developing technology skills for the entire school through professional development initiatives or helping staff members one-on-one, digital librarians are a must-have resource for schools that want to use technology effectively for learning." https://lnkd.in/gvaYQHNi
