AI @Scale is a technical conference for engineers who are interested in building, operating, and using machine learning systems at scale. The AI landscape is evolving and scaling up fast, posing unique and complex engineering challenges in developing distributed systems, hardware, networking and more. The @Scale community focuses on bringing people together to discuss these challenges and collaborate on the development of new innovative solutions. This year’s AI @Scale will be focused on the new challenges that AI presents for infrastructure at scale. Speakers from Meta will present their work focusing on a diverse set of opportunities, and share the innovation we’re making across the end-to-end infrastructure stack from data centers to software. Together with us, additional industry-leading companies such as AWS, Microsoft, Salesforce, Fiddler, Outerbounds, Unity, Union.ai, Cruise will present how they are tackling these challenges today. We hope the event fosters a community that can discuss and collaborate on the development of practical industry solutions together. AI @Scale will be hosted virtually on September 28th starting at 9am PT, and will feature keynote, tech talks, fireside and Q&A sessions. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you there! Earlier this month I closed a long chapter in my career as I turned in my badge and left Microsoft after more than 26 years. In looking back at this amazing adventure with such an incredible company, I leave with a sense of pride and accomplishment, mixed with humility, gratitude, a touch of sadness, and tons of excitement for the future. I am forever indebted to the many amazing people without whom this journey would never have been possible. From intern to CVP over a quarter century, I’ve seen Microsoft grow and evolve, and while it’s a very different company today than it was when I joined, I believe that Microsoft is today the best version I’ve known, I will miss this company dearly. Next week a new chapter starts! As I reflect on my own journey and look ahead at the future, I wish everyone in my network the very best in their own personal and professional endeavors. With 2020 nearly behind us, I want to wish you all a wonderful New Year, and a safe, healthy and fulfilling 2021! Leaving 2020 with this post, and the obligatory before/after badge picture 😊

You may have seen some press around Project Natick, Microsoft’s research project that explores the feasibility of underwater datacenters. Very proud of the role that my team, Core Platform Engineering, played in making this a success, in particular Lathish Chaparala and Chakradhar T. who stepped in to extend the datacenter’s network connectivity so it could be safely removed from the seabed, all without requiring additional hardware. Great to see the principles of One Microsoft, growth mindset, and adaptability in action through this project. To learn further about the datacenter and our teams work on it, head to this blog post and read this incredible story. I’m personally excited to learn more about the research findings from Project Natick as they come out. Exciting times!

On this November 11th Veteran’s Day (also called Armistice Day and Remembrance Day), I want to send my deep respect and appreciation to all of you who have served or are currently serving in the military. I’ve also been thinking about my maternal grandfather, René Garcia (left), today. He joined the Free French Forces during WWII and is pictured here during the Germany campaign in August 1945 after his company were engaged in North Africa, Italy, and then into Germany. He rose to rank of sergeant and was not quite twenty four years old in this picture, younger than my son is today. All of your service has allowed us to take for granted the life of freedom we enjoy today! Thank you all.

My colleague John Jendrezak posted about the work we’re getting accomplished in Core Services Engineering around accessibility and his Studio’s employability work. I’m super proud of this priority we have at Microsoft, and of the impact it has in building an inclusive environment that empowers all users. Kudos on the great work! #microsoft #accessibility
October is National Employee Disability Awareness Month, an important opportunity to reflect on employment issues for people with disabilities and how we’re contributing to increasing access and opportunity in the workplace. Globally, more than 1 billion people identify as having some form of disability, and in the U.S., just 19% of people with disabilities were employed in 2019 compared to 66% of those without. There is a clear and urgent need to close this gap. Accessibility and inclusion is both a responsibility and an opportunity, and starts with approaching everything we do—from designing and building experiences for Microsoft’s employees to the culture of our workplace—from a lens of #inclusion. My friend and colleague Tricia Fejfar leads these efforts for Core Services Engineering and Operations, supported by a team of brilliant researchers and designers. Every day, this talented group comes together to develop solutions that help #Microsoft employees of all abilities do their best work. Their philosophy? Putting people at the center of everything they do so that the true #diversity of everyone who uses a product or experience is reflected. Tricia and team share their story on our IT Showcase blog; please take a moment today to read about their incredible impact.

Last week I had the pleasure to pop into a Table Talk session at MS Ignite with some awesome MVPs. I ensured I was adequately caffeinated for that 6:30am PST session, but it was hardly needed as this global group (WE/EMEA) brought energy, humor, and engaging conversation around Azure topics. With a session title like “The possibilities are endless with Azure” I thought the group did pretty well discussing that in just 30 minutes! The conversations revolved around key Azure announcements at Ignite, the unprecedented momentum of companies migrating to Azure since COVID-19 and how Microsoft has itself handled its own cloud migration. I was also very interested in hearing about the pros and cons of this sudden work-from-home culture. As hard as this new normal is for us all, folks have commented on how meetings have improved and gotten more inclusive by going remote because of features like Teams’ live captioning, together mode and hand raise. While we could only begin to dive into what was newly announced in Azure, I deeply enjoyed this brief and rich interaction with the community. And what a fantastic Ignite! All digital for 48 hours and packed with amazing content and connections. I’m looking forward to the next one in March!
