On 8 October 2023 I will be running a half marathon through the streets and royal parks of London to raise money for Young Lives Vs Cancer. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it threatens everything, for them and their family. At a time when they should be busy being children, enjoying their rollercoaster teenage years or finding their feet at uni, life becomes full of fear. Fear of treatment, but also of families being torn apart, of overwhelming money worries, mental health stretched to breaking point, of having nowhere to turn, no one to talk to. Young Lives Vs Cancer helps children and young people (0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. Young Lives Vs Cancer work hard to make sure each family has what they need to get through cancer. It could be a financial grant for a parent struggling to keep their child warm through their treatment or for a young person who can’t afford to get to hospital. Or helping a family stay together at one of their free Homes from Home close to the hospital where their child is having treatment. With those people who I have talked about the importance of this charity understand why I am so passionate to raise money for this cause. Young Lives Vs Cancer is a charity that is very close to my heart as it has helped my loved ones to gain the support they need during a very difficult time. Awareness for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital- Cancer has effected all of us at one time or another. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for U.S. children past infancy. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has increased children's survivability from 20% 50 years ago to 80% today. In order to help raise funds for many families and children whose lives have been affected by cancer, I will be competing the toughest 50k race in the USA; the Speedgoat Mountain Race in Utah July 19-20th. Hi, I am a St. Jude Hero! My family (Dr. Claudiana Triskatis) and myself moved to the USA last year. As part of living in this great country it was always my dream to run the New York Marathon and this year I will do it - on the day of my birthday! When researching on the race, I realized that I could make it happen and combine this with a bigger reason by fundraising for the kids and families at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital: 1) Every donation helps find a cure for childhood cancer. Did you know: Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food - because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. 2) Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer. 3) St. Jude freely shares the discoveries it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.
