As we commemorate Juneteenth, we reflect on a pivotal moment in American history—the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. This day marks the culmination of centuries of struggle, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of justice and equality. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom; it is a profound reminder of the enduring fight against systemic racism and the ongoing journey toward true liberation for all marginalized communities. As counselors committed to social justice, this day resonates deeply with our mission and values. Let us honor this day by reaffirming our commitment to dismantling oppressive systems and advocating for equity and inclusion in all aspects of our work. We must amplify the voices of the unheard, educate ourselves and others about the historical and contemporary realities of racial injustice, and actively engage in practices that promote healing and empowerment within our communities. We can influence positive change as counselors, educators, supervisors, students, and advocates. Let us use this platform to support and uplift those who continue to be impacted by racial disparities. Together, we can foster environments where every individual is valued and respected. On this Juneteenth, may we find inspiration in the resilience of those who came before us and the courage to continue their legacy. Let us celebrate freedom while committing to the remaining work, ensuring that future generations experience a world rooted in justice and equality.

Native American Heritage Month is a time for people of all backgrounds to learn about, acknowledge, and appreciate the rich and diverse cultural tapestry of Native American communities in the United States. It also involves learning about the historical and ongoing struggles faced by Native American communities, including the suppression, elimination, and disenfranchisement they have endured at the hands of the United States government and society. Recognizing and acknowledging these injustices is an essential aspect of understanding Native American history and culture. This Native American Heritage Month, let's honor and uplift indigenous voices! Here's how we can thoughtfully support and dismantle historical injustices: Educate: Learn about Native American history, cultures, and issues. Listen: Seek out and respect Indigenous perspectives. Acknowledge: Recognize historical injustices. Support: Back Indigenous-led initiatives and businesses. Advocate: Stand up for policy changes and social justice. Challenge Stereotypes: Promote respectful representation. Engage: Participate in cultural exchanges. Allyship: Fight racism and discrimination. Vote and Advocate: Support Indigenous rights through the democratic process. Education: Encourage teaching Indigenous history in schools, even the hard stuff. Dialogue: Foster understanding and reconciliation. One thing you can do right now is find out whose land you’re on at native-land.ca. Addressing the deep-rooted injustices and disparities faced by Native Americans is a long-term commitment. It requires ongoing efforts, self-reflection, and a willingness to actively support and uplift indigenous communities. Engaging in these actions with respect, humility, and a genuine commitment to justice can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.
