There continues to be gender disparity in STEM roles. Both in the percentage of women who are in these roles as well as inequalities in pay. This starts with each graduating class. As a fresh graduate, the first job can lay the foundation for salary and opportunities for the entire duration of a person’s career. How can we take action to help women in STEM? An internship is a great way to provide an opportunity for a woman to take her first step on her career ladder. As you seek candidates, work with your internal recruiters to ensure you are able to advertise and attract women from STEM degree programs to apply for your roles. The 10-12 weeks of hands-on work she receives in the summer will provide her with experience to be considered for additional roles once she graduates. And she will always remember her internship and how it helped to launch her forward. As a hiring manager, you can make a difference.
I was dreading International Women’s Day. I’m sorry, but the volume of posts claiming support and empowerment can’t possibly be true, or there wouldn’t be the inequalities we see today. Don’t be like the boyfriend that buys flowers on Valentine’s Day, then is a shit the rest of the time. As the great Cindy Gallop says ‘…don't use words like 'empower' and 'celebrate'. Instead, use words like 'hire', 'promote', 'pay', 'raise', 'bonus', 'fund', 'invest in', 'enrich', 'give equity to', 'put on the board', 'vote for', 'elect', 'lead' - and don't just say it, ACTUALLY DO IT. ‘ … and do it for anyone facing barriers. #IWD2024

Whether it’s a friend, mentor, or even yourself - who do you celebrate this #IWD24? Dear beautiful and strong woman, do you agree with me? Life is a journey of transformation, marked by moments of growth, change, and self-discovery. One of which is the transition from girlhood to womanhood. This metamorphosis is not merely physical but encompasses emotional, psychological, and social dimensions that come together to shape the essence of a woman. Reflecting on my remarkable journey here are my thoughts on the intricacies of becoming a woman. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2024 #InspiringInclusion #WomenEmpowerment #WomenEntrepreneurs #WomenLeaders #Equity #Empowerment #Inclusivity #InspireInclusion

IWD has just past. The hashtags will be put away until next year, but this is where the real work starts. And it starts with intentional allyship and creating equal enviroments in every way. At our Women of Worley event last week, our committee had an open Q&A session afterwards, during which we were asked how we could encourage men to get more involved in our events. Firas Ali, (Wow committee member) spoke about how important it is to get involved with something you believe in, even when it makes you uncomfortable. About how the uncomfortable thing is often the right thing to do. So here's to a year of getting uncomfortable, finding and promoting allyship everywhere, and creating a world with equal expectations, no matter who or where you are. #InspireInclusion #InternationalwomensDay #Allyship
I sat next to a gentleman on the plane this week and couldn’t help but overhear him as he called his wife before takeoff to tell her how much he loved her and couldn’t wait to see her and their daughter. Towards the end of the flight we started to chat, and he told me about his 14-year-old daughter and it was pretty clear how proud he was of her. He mentioned that he has become a purposeful advocate for women, and is always looking for ways to support and do better. He talked about caring deeply about the world his daughter is growing into and the treatment his wife and female colleagues experience. I couldn’t help but be hopeful that more and more people are thinking like he is, who strive to be inclusive, and seek equity and diversity in all incidences. The clip below is a re-creation from perhaps one of the best movie monologues ever written and was in the Barbie movie. (Thank you America Ferrara). It sadly hits home for too many women. This puts into words what so many women feel daily. For those of you good people out there, who, like the gentleman on the plane, are wondering what more you can do, perhaps hearing this will help you to better understand. Because once we try to understand each other we can better appreciate each other. I hope it will help with what you might be able to do, in both your words and actions, to make sure these aren’t feelings that anybody has to experience. We are equal. We are different, yet the same. Happy #iwd2024 everyone. May your light never be dimmed because someone told you that you have no right to shine.

60% of women said they DON'T feel that they have access to the SAME career growth opportunities as their male counterparts, regardless of personal circumstances like child care or elder care. 🚺💼 This isn't just a number; it's a glaring issue. It's time to break down these barriers, ensuring every woman has a fair shot at professional advancement, irrespective of her life stage. 🌟 Help us change the narrative. Whether it’s a friend, mentor, or even yourself - who do you celebrate this #IWD24? This Women’s Day 2024, I celebrate the women who are shining for others, in the midst of their own pain and suffering! I hope you feel comforted knowing that you are not alone on this journey, that believe it or not, your struggles aren't foreign and that your courage to share and open up has helped so many. The trauma, pain, hurt, setbacks, disappointments have lifted us to see the world differently. 💗 It's made us true women -- women who care, love, empathize. 💗 It's made us women determined to offer support to another, especially when it counts. 💗 It's made us women who are unafraid to stand up for injustice and cruelty. 💗 It's made us women capable of creating lasting change, women who embody love and grace. 💗 It's made women with the capacity to touch hearts and understand deep pain. And, I couldn't think of something more beautiful and fulfilling. Let's honor our strength. Let's honor our commitment to remain soft and kind hearted in a world that has shown us otherwise. We have chosen to walk with grace and kindness, amidst so much, and that, if only, is the best legacy we can leave for the women who walk this journey after us. #iwd2024womenleadingtheway #iwd2024 #womenandgirlsinscience #womenineducation #wearewomen #kindandcaringwomen

Six years ago, on a day much like today, I stepped out of the office after another workday. As I waited for the bus, I glanced up at the building’s entrance and noticed a rainbow flag fluttering next to the company’s name. Curious, I pulled out my phone and discovered that it was May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), and it commemorates the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. While my friends, family, and colleagues are aware of my sexual orientation, I recognize that I still encounter certain barriers because of it. However, I also acknowledge my immense privilege in other aspects of my life. I am a white cisgender man who had access to education, holds European citizenship and grew up in a peaceful environment. These factors have shaped who I am and how others perceive me. It struck me that when you tick so many boxes on the privilege checklist, you become less vulnerable to oppression. That day at the bus stop, I realized I could do more than merely enjoy my rights and privileges—there was an opportunity to contribute. I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and personal growth. Ultimately, I resolved to make the workplace a better, more inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ individuals. We at Siemens Energy have been organising internal events, educational sessions, and many more global and regional activities to raise awareness about the struggles that the LGBTQIA+ community still faces in the workplace, and learn how to build a culture of respect, acceptance and support in our company. 🌈 Today I invite you to encourage your colleagues to educate themselves, and engage with the LGBTQIA+ community. By doing so, we empower them to contribute to making our workplace an even better environment for everyone. #idahobit #pride2024 #idahobit2024

On this International Women's Day, I'm honored to share a glimpse of my journey—a testament to the unyielding strength and resilience that defines womanhood. As a mother of two, I've navigated the highs and lows of motherhood with unwavering love and dedication. However, my path took an unexpected turn when I was confronted with the challenges of endometriosis. At 38, I made the courageous decision to undergo a hysterectomy to confront this formidable adversary head-on. Facing menopause before the age of 40 was not part of my plan, but it became an integral part of my story—a chapter marked by adaptation and growth. Despite the physical and emotional toll, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of a fulfilling career. Balancing professional ambitions with the complexities of health and family life has been a journey defined by resilience and tenacity. Today, as I reflect on the hurdles overcome and the triumphs achieved, I am reminded of the countless women who embody strength in the face of adversity. Our stories are a testament to the power within each of us—a reminder that resilience knows no bounds. This International Women's Day, let's celebrate the diversity of women's experiences—the victories, the challenges, and the extraordinary resilience that binds us together. Together, let's continue to uplift and empower one another, knowing that our collective strength knows no limits. In the lead-up to International Women's Week, we will be shedding light on the various obstacles and disparities faced by women and individuals who fall outside the conventional norms of society. Our main focus will be on the field of transportation planning and engineering, where we aim to share personal stories and propose solutions for a better future. We are open to hearing your insights on these pressing issues. Our initial article delves into Stephanie Crossley's journey as a new parent. "Sport has always been a significant part of my life, and even during my pregnancy, I was able to continue running and swimming with my team. However, things changed drastically once Gus was born. I had planned to stay active by taking him for daily walks while my body recovered. But this seemingly simple activity became a daily struggle as I discovered that there were many obstacles along the way. Sometimes, there were no kerb ramps, other times, the footpath was far too narrow, and there were electricity poles plonked in the middle of paths. Oh, and the worst was having finally reached the train station, you find the accessible route to get in is back the way you came (unsigned) and not serviced by a crossing point (humph!). My husband often accompanied me, and we had to take turns walking on the road to make sure following traffic gave enough space between the pram and baby as they passed by. It felt like I was doing military patrol drills, checking my flanks for cars. As I failed to find accessible routes from home, my frustration grew. I tried to plan driving trips to reach places where things would be more manageable, but it became too much of a hassle, and I lost the energy to keep up with the struggle. My world became small during those initial months, and life felt like a real struggle both physically and emotionally." #crossleytp #womensweek #IWD2024 #gender #StreetsForPeople #inequality #universalaccess #experience #betterstreets #justice #investinginwomen #transportplanning
