Here's what happened: The Story: Our head of engineering, whom I considered an ally or even a friend, sent me a video through Slack without a thumbnail. Curiously, I clicked on it to discover a pet rabbit swiftly transitioning to a skinned rabbit being chopped up. This incident was particularly distressing for three reasons: Reasons for Distress: 1. I am a vegetarian 2. I have a pet rabbit that I cherish 3. I recently endured a traumatic experience The Response: Upon questioning why he sent me this video, he claimed he thought I would find it amusing. On the contrary, it caught me off guard and felt like a targeted attack on my beliefs and emotions. After a long day at work, you come home exhausted and can’t stand the thought of going back tomorrow. You will talk to everyone again, pour all the time into endless tasks and still smile at everyone. Well, if it sounds similar, it’s either a sign of burnout or issues with the team. Social battery running out is real and happens more often than you imagine. I feel it’s particularly relevant for software development companies. Whenever I start to feel like that, I reflect on the reasons. Did I have too many calls back to back? Have I established my boundaries with a new team member? Is workflow heavier than last month? Once I have the answer, I do my best to correct that mistake. Or voice it out if it’s not directly what I’ve done. Taking a break works too, but the root won’t fix itself.
