Hands-on exposure to the workplace is incredibly influential.

"He is too old to make the role change and he doesn't have relevant experience", said the Head of HR to the Hiring Manager. My heart sank when I heard this 😥 I was 28 ! I had been an electronic design-development engineer for 6 years. I had lectured and trained 20+ engineers from our Asian customer, on the electronic equipment that I was senior engineer on. I was an engineer with good communication skills. My eyes had been opened that maybe my future was in a hybrid technical-commercial role. I had a vision of professional life away from the R&D lab. The Hiring Manager stood his ground and won the argument with the Head of HR. He took a chance on me. I successfully made the transition into Technical Sales from a purely Design background.....by taking a "systems" type approach to end customer applications I became their most successful Technical Sales Engineer....and after that all new Sales staff had to come from a design background. I went onto have a 32 year career with Burr Brown, Maxim, Linear Technology and Analog Devices The key character traits that served me well were adaptability and curiosity. Now in the autumn of my career, the question is can you really teach old dogs new tricks? 🐶 I will still be talking with the engineering design community on applications in #EMI and #thermalmanagement properties. I get to learn about our Gii-Sens technology I will now have a new audience of scientists...for those involved in #electrochemistry, #assaydevelopment and #materialsscience in biosensors and battery applications Scientists arent that different from Engineers....right? 🤓😎 Have a good weekend.
