"Success is not having regrets." I used to think of success in terms of: Money Awards Power (number of people reporting to me). No matter how well I did, there were always others more "successful." Then my son was born. I got more focused as there was more at stake. Then came my daughter. At the time, my boss was a woman who outsourced the raising of her son to a nanny. The day the nanny attended the parent-teacher conference in lieu of mom and dad was a day that changed my life. I decided success was not having regrets. A few years later I started working for myself. I focused--and still do--on helping professionals by improving their business. I focus on making contributions that are important to others. You know what? That is a really good business model. Focusing on my Best Clients allows me to create a big impact. I know I'm making contributions because my clients tell me so. I avoid clients who cause headaches so my business runs smoothly. I used the time to be an active Dad. I have no regrets. I'm not poor and happy; I've done really well as I look out at the undeveloped woodlands across the street from my window. How to you define success? Most firm owners I know started their businesses because they wanted to help business owners. It's a noble cause. But it usually ends up causing them more problems than it solves. Here's why: Firm owners legitimately care about their clients. They're good-hearted people who want to help as best they can. But often, this altruism gets (unconsciously) translated to: "If I want to help this client -- then I must bend over backwards for them." ... so they do. The client gets more than they're paying for, and they don't realize the true value of what's being provided. The firm owner does this for all their clients, so they get burnt out. Often to the point where their work suffers. The client becomes unhappy. Goes price shopping. Leaves. ... and the cycle repeats itself. In an effort to help the client -- the firm owner ends up losing them. This is why I constantly talk about charging high prices, correctly communicating your value, and setting firm boundaries. When you do this, you have the bandwidth (and the margins!) to provide REAL value to the client -- for the long-term. #accountingandaccountants

I’ve never wanted to be on X-Factor. Legit never. But I have always wanted to become a priest. And YESTERDAY I got through the penultimate part of the process with the Church in Wales The irony being the process is a bit like X-Factor for Jesus. Years of practicing behind the scenes. Opening your self up for criticism. No way to ‘hack’ the system. Zero control. Frocks. A client prompted me as I was doing my preparation to say: “But what about the business coaching then? Will you still see clients?” And the answer is 10000% yes. I’m a huge fan of the ‘both’, ‘and’ In fact one directly influences the other. I call my self the Marketplace Monk because I believe that it’s impossible start or scale a business that lasts without faith. - Faith you can make more money (and know how to) - Faith that you can spend time with the family - Faith that you can make a difference And I also believe you can do all of the above without compromising on your belief, your values or your morals. I also fervently believe that there is a lot of money out there to be had when you apply three core principles I like to call the Firm Foundations™️ Recurring Revenue - You need a profitable service bringing cash, on repeat. Personal Protocols - You need a framework to protect Body, Mind and Soul Missional Focus - You need a community to transform, lead and serve. Business = a spiritual game. Which is why you need someone who understand both sides of the equation. Call me a coach. Call me a Marketplace Monk. Call me an Entrepreneurial Chaplain. Call me your secret money-making weapon. 🌟 Empowering Small Business Resilience 🌟 In the past week, my heart ached witnessing two small businesses here in my cherished Parker, CO community facing serious challenges. Firstly, a local restaurant encountered fierce backlash when a thoughtless comment from a manager to a moms Instagram story about her child rippled through social media. Our town's bond, especially amongst the amazing mom tribe, is fierce. The impact of one person's choices shouldn't define a whole establishment, but so often it does. Equally sad, a beloved gymnastics center faced allegations of racism, a sentiment that goes against our town's values. The rapid and unyielding response from the community has been a wonder to watch, even when the full story is yet to unfold. While I can't unravel the entirety of these incidents, a few certainties stand strong: 1️⃣ **Guarding Small Business** Locally owned small business face unique challenges in this dynamic era of social media. 2️⃣ **Leaders Shape the Path** Whether in a cozy corner shop or a huge corporation, managers wield immense power in shaping a business's character. Their actions echo throughout- never more than now. 3️⃣ **Nurturing Expertise** Under skilled people are destined to make mistakes. These incidents remind me of the Chinese proverb Robert Van Valkenburgh CSCS recently shared: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago." The best time to prepare your managers to protect, drive, and help your small business thrive was before they became managers. If not then, the best time to start is today. There are more important things 🤍✨🕊️ All over social media, you see people talking about the big figures 5K months, 10 K months. Seven figures 🎄 The elusive money trap 🪤 But last year I completely switched from this. I decided to completely change my business model and went from those big figures into deeper balance I came off social media completely for 10 months Went alcohol free Ate clean & lost just under three stone 🕊️ I don’t mean it’s a choice of either or, but for me my life has changed. My priorities have changed.🤍 I still serve incredible spaces with such depth and transformation. Yet on the flipside, I have more time now for my partner, my boy who is in GCSE year And my family I made that choice 🤍✨⏰ I decided that I wanted to be fully present with them as I could feel my business was becoming a machine, and whilst yes, I was earning incredible money and had seven people working for me, I wasn’t having the memories and magic with my family.🕊️🕊️🕊️ So now, yes, I do still incredible incredible work with those who journey with me, but for me, money isn’t everything 🕊️Being there for my boy when he gets home from school 🕊️ taking a walk down the beach, not only for my well-being but also just because I love it 🕊️ Having time to cook nourishing food for my family 🕊️ basically, having more time for the magic. ✨🕊️ How about you? The real truth about having insecurities and how the powerhouses around you have got you. Do you really have to have everything sorted all the time? Are you not allowed days when you think, ‘is it worth it?’ Does Beryl always have to be in your ear? (Beryl is what I call the little voice in your head who gives you negative feedback – also called Imposter Syndrome). Beryl (or imposter syndrome) is real, the friend you never wanted but will just not go away. Now you see, I know I have so many things to be grateful for as am award winning, published author and speaker but still Beryl lives in my head. And recently I have found myself asking… ‘Who am I to be considered for another award?’, ‘why don’t I have it sorted all of the time?’ and ‘why does my anxiety take hold sometimes?’. ⠀ But I remember to put on my big girl pants and see ⭐️ There is nothing stopping me ⭐️ Others do not have it sorted all of the time (even though they may give that impression) ⭐️ I never let my anxiety stop me from doing the important things �� And you know what, it is a pleasure to work with the incredible women in my world, to see the impact on their confidence, businesses and lives. So from having no start up investment or experience of running a small business, I am four years on and not only still here but thriving. And surrounded by a community of female entrepreneurs who are incredible. ⠀ It does not matter who you are and how loudly Beryl shouts, you got this and deserve huge success. I am so grateful to be recognised as I am now a finalist for the Small Business of the Year in the 2023 Birmingham Awards.
