All the conference rooms were booked and I had a few ideas for the firm that I couldn't wait to discuss.... ....fine, I'm kidding. We weren't in San Francisco at Levi's Stadium during the NFC Championship game for a partner meeting. Ralph is actually a diehard San Francisco 49ers fan and had tickets to the game. Believe it or not, we did discuss some firm business before the game. Running an operation the size and scope of Friedman Vartolo LLP isn't a 9-5 job. It takes intense focus and foresight and our brains never stop. The second we stop pushing and brainstorming is the second the dozens of competitors nipping at our heels gain some ground. We've been able to remain ahead of the pack because we're as obsessed with success as the teams that played that afternoon. While the drive successful athletes and business owners possess may be similar, the playing field is vastly different. Organizational success isn't some static thing that can be achieved and celebrated. Friedman Vartolo LLP can't hang a championship banner when we have a great year. Our only reward is the challenge of getting to do it all over again. To truly be successful, a company or law firm must continually re-achieve success, day after day, month after month, year after year. Imagine you’re attending the company all-hands meeting and your CEO starts with the following speech: “I gathered you today to reinforce the message that we're here to fight back. We aim to defend our position in the market and capture an even larger slice. Therefore, we have to attack the opposition. To win this battle, and ultimately the war, we need a strategy for disruption. Being on the defensive is not an option. Sometimes, aggressive moves are required…” Have you realized that you participate in war? Because, sadly, business is approached the same way as war. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here's how to approach business in a better way:

What a defining moment for Greyhound! Landing into a new consolidated premises at the East End which shall replace the current 2121 Main St. destination. This move is not only strategic, but a tangible reflection that significant transformations are in play. • One can envisage multiple factors that may have driven this relocation decision, with the primary ones likely being financial, operational efficiency, and perhaps a subtle mode of redefining and repositioning the brand. • An optimal calculation of cost and benefits may have sparked this move. By releasing the Main St. premises, which was on sale since January, the company could have unlocked an enormous asset value. This windfall cash influx can be wisely disbursed to trimming down any existing lays that may have been tying them down economically. • The formation of a new consolidated terminal invariably drives efficiencies. Streamlining operations across the supply chain brings process enhancement and mechanical efficiency, which translates into tangible cost savings, less ‘down-time’ and overall improved customer service & experience. The glance towards the future seems bright for Greyhound with this strategic move. My intuition predicts a series of follow-up pivots lining up from Greyhound, this chosen location at the East End potentially serving as a catalyst. • Will it lead to an increase in the number of routes? Will it pave the way for Ground's debut expansion to untapped markets? Lastly, I’m quite intrigued and curious to see the brand redefinition phase unfurl itself as Greyhound steps to a significant but a seemingly calculated risk. With reinvented solidarity from the East End symbolising a fresh start, we may witness a vibrant Greyhound emerge with a renewed aspirational image, heightened market presence, and a mightier zeal to run faster and farther. To say it's fascinating is an understatement – I am entirely enthralled to see how Greyhound navigates this change. What impact it will leave on the market, the customers, and fundamentally on its brand image, remains a keenly awaited space to watch.

At least once daily, I take time to reflect upon my path to this point. And I encourage everyone to do the same. With our focus trained so intently upon the path ahead, it’s all too easy to forget where we came from. Undoubtedly, our origin featured difficult times, so it’s key that we remember them if we are to remain humble. Our business acumen is truly compromised as soon as we allow new successes to cloud past humility. I like to think those who know me would see me as scrappy. Running your own jewelry business demands it of you! For over 15 years, I drove back and forth across the US attending up to 50 shows annually to sell my creations. Art exhibitions, retail and wholesale events… I did it all. The logistics were tough, the budgeting tougher. Once, I was at a show in Austin, Texas, where I managed to secure accommodation, a flight and a rental car for a little over $300. As always, something had to give. Every setback would become an opportunity to innovate and adapt. Whether negotiating deals or finding creative money-saving solutions, I would embrace the challenges with tenacity and resilience. I think of such moments often. No matter my successes, I remain the same person. As long as I don’t lose sight of that, I can move forward with a clear conscience. How do you maintain humility and perspective amidst your successes?

The overnight success! I was re-watching the 1988 classic Coming to America, and I came to this scene with Samuel L. Jackson. And I was like, What?! This character was the legendary Samuel L. Jackson?!   Amazed at how I had watched that movie years ago but never realized he was the one because I didn’t know him at the time.
