Let's talk about John Lewis & Partners...
I got really frustrated this morning with both the Retail Gazette and JDM Retail because I don't think anyone, beyond the JLP partners, has any licence to say 'Job half done' to a female executive who has likely tried her damnedest to make it work.
We need to be, quite simply, kinder to people. We shouldn't create click bait headings, especially when people, humans like you and I, are at the end of it. It's the whole JLP team who will feel the anxiety.
Dame Sharon Michele White, was recruited into role in 2020. I mean, imagine taking the helm of a department store chain in the midst of the pandemic. Especially as, for the first time in history, retail closed not once, but twice.
I think there are a few things to digest.
Firstly, I have massive respect and admiration for anyone tackling the challenges in retail, but, not just at frontline level, at an executive level too. I was the transformation director at Debenhams in its turnaround programme in 2017/18, prior to that I have a 25 year retail career that covers pretty much every position from bottom to top. I can tell you that every decision you make, every update, every board meeting - people are at the heart of those decisions. That role was the most stressful role of my career, I worked 18 hour days sometimes, to ensure the success, but nobody criticised me. We were all a team under corporate governance striving to make it work. The chair never really dictated the moves, or the strategy, more so supported and made it happen.
The department store is an absolute oil tanker. You can't just relocate, you're stuck with leases, legacy ways of working, huge on costs of people, consultants vested in how long they could stay on their seats. The capex just isn't available, hundreds of leaders all with their own agenda, big org charts that make no sense. It takes far longer than a few years tenure to make an impact.
The stress and strain and impact on your mental health is very real, and sadly the media and journalism play a huge impact.
The narrative from arm chair retail warriors that I've seen today and of recent times is really poor. I've made loads of mistakes in my career, big and small, as I'm sure we all have.
If we really want to get back to our roots and develop the UK into a leading retail destination, we've got to stop criticising one another and start learning.
Let's stop being 'Top retail influencers'. In my nearly 30 years experience, I never really got influenced by a linkedIn top retail influencer.
Let's foster a sense of togetherness. UK retail could be amazing.
(If you want my view in more detail, here's a link to my Department store of the future briefing. Over 1,200 people dialled in to this webinar. Kate and I also recently spoke at the International association of department stores https://www.iads.org/)
Please let's be kinder to our retail colleagues.
Whatever the level.
