Product Managersโฆ.Do you struggle to say no? In order to play big, you need to prioritize. Seems simple right?
How about instead of saying โNoโ when you get asked to do something, say โthis isnโt a priority right now.โ
By saying this, you take back your POWER. Because YOU are in control of what you spend your time on.
And suddenly, youโll feel like you have more time ๐

If you want to grow exponentially in any field, including product management, donโt learn from your peers.
Learn from those who are way ahead of you.
I am not saying you canโt learn from your peers. You absolutely can.
I am saying that insights from those who are already where you want to be will help you get there 10X times faster.

"I'm not a decision-maker."
This is a common objection I hear from product managers, but I actually view it as a positive.
Typically, itโs not VPs or C-suite executives who are using the tools dailyโitโs the product managers.
They are often the first to encounter any glaring issues. The direct impact these issues have on their work gives their feedback invaluable weight.
Product managers have a deep understanding of how tools integrate into daily operations and projects. Their insights are not only relevant but critical for actionable improvements.
Given their integral role in the daily usage and success of these tools, product managers should undoubtedly have a significant say in decisions about changing or removing tools.
When I hear "I'm not a decision-maker," it's a cue to ask more questions about how theyโre finding their current solution, whatโs working and whatโs not.
Their experience and feedback are vital for making informed improvements that truly matter.
Because ultimately theyโre the ones most affected
Can we take a minute to honor good product managers
Especially the great ones who work at tech companies
Where their whole world of complexity
Is building something to simplify the world
Over the years I've had the good fortune of working
With some stellar minds in the Product Management space
But, the flipside is the what this video highlights (see below)
As also an occurrence I've experience firsthand in a few orgs
The product manager doesn't know their "stuff"
โ Without good product managers, the marketing function
โ Engaging between product, engineering, and sales
โ Becomes Tom Smykowski from the movie Office Space
1st Bob: What you do at Initech is you take the specifications from the customer and bring them down to the software engineers?
Tom: Yes, yes that's right.
2nd Bob: Well then I just have to ask why can't the customers take them directly to the software people?
Tom: Well, I'll tell you why... because... engineers are not good at dealing with customers...
1st Bob: So you physically take the specs from the customer?
Tom: Well... No. My secretary does that... or they're faxed.
2nd Bob: So then you must physically bring them to the software people?
Tom: Well... No. ah sometimes.
1st Bob: What would you say you do here?
Tom: Look I already told you, I deal with the @#$% customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people, can't you understand that? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!
โ All departments perform better together when both the wealth of knowledge and the ability to articulate it work harmoniously.
๐๐ผ How do you mitigate the damage caused by a leader who may not know their "stuff"?

In the realm of #productmanagement, Steve Jobs' wisdom holds true as your work in this field will undoubtedly consume a significant portion of your professional life. To achieve true satisfaction in product management, one must align their efforts with the pursuit of great work. Just as Jobs revolutionized the tech industry by striving for greatness, product managers too must be driven by a passion for delivering exceptional products, a commitment to innovation, and a dedication to creating value for both the company and its customers. By infusing your work with a sense of purpose and a relentless pursuit of excellence, you can find fulfillment in contributing to the creation of products that truly make a difference in the market.
So many folks conflate managers with management.
Let's remind ourselves:
Manager is not management
And likewise
Product Manager is not product management
So when someone says 'We don't have Product Managers in our organisation' that does not mean they don't do product management in their organisation.
Likewise, I have seen well functioning organisations without Product Managers and I have seen poorly functioning organisations with Product Managers. Non of this should be a surprise if you understand Deming 95/5 says that 95% of an organisationโs performance is attributable to its systems and only 5% is due to the people.
