Did you know that "more than 1.3 billion people experience significant disability today?" That’s 16% of the global population (World Health Organization, 2023). International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is celebrated on December 3 every year to raise awareness and promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. When barriers to inclusion are removed, and people with disabilities can fully participate in society, the entire community benefits. What measures can you take to ensure that people with disabilities have access in the workplace? Here are 3 places to start: • Ensure that all employees understand the importance of accessibility and cultivate an inclusive culture. Educate employees about the benefits of an inclusive workplace and provide training on how to identify and eliminate barriers to accessibility. • Consider how your workplace may impact a person with a disability. Assess your workplace for potential barriers to accessibility, such as physical, communication, and attitudinal barriers. Make accommodations as needed. • Recognize neurodiversity (natural variations of the human brain which influence cognitive and intellectual processes) – this is one of the most common unapparent disabilities. Be mindful of the different ways people think and learn, and provide accommodations as needed to support neurodiverse employees. What would you add to this list? When was the last time you were ENabled rather than DISabled at work? As an AuDHDer, I wanted to take a moment to discuss the Social Model of Disability. Instead of seeing disability solely as a result of someone's medical condition, the Social Model highlights how societal barriers and attitudes can create disabilities for individuals who have specific impairments. Embracing the Social Model means recognising that it's not our differences that disable us, but rather the barriers and prejudices woven into our social fabric. For neurodivergent individuals, this can make all the difference in our ability to participate and enable us to thrive in the workplace. Whether through: - Flexible work arrangements - Sensory-friendly environments, or  - Communication accommodations These adjustments create a more inclusive and supportive culture. Myths about disability at work that needs to stop 🤦♂️ 🤦♀️ 1️⃣ "Disabled people are not interested in a career" Over 70% of disabled individuals receiving income support express a strong desire to work. But more often than not, they are met by inaccessible recruitment systems that overlook the invaluable skills they have. 2️⃣ "Disabled people always require help" 1 in 5 of the UK population are disabled, and each person is unique. Last week the Wharton Human Capital Club and Disability Empowerment & Action League held a panel on best practices for hiring and supporting Employees with Disabilities. Here are three powerful takeaways: 1️⃣ Proactive HR & Inclusive Policies: Neil McDevitt from the Deaf-Hearing Communication Centre, Inc. highlighted the importance of proactive engagement from HR and the need for clear policies and a centralized budget for accommodations. He stressed on having regular conversations about workplace culture and accommodations, urging organizations to view themselves through the lens of potential employees with disabilities. 2️⃣ Inclusion Beyond Compliance: Regina "Gina" Kline from Enable Ventures and SmartJob moved the discussion from non-discrimination to employment optimization. She emphasized disability as an identity and a minority experience, urging the shift towards inclusive design and how disability-focused ventures can scale to benefit broader society. 3️⃣ Universal Access & Community: Cait Russell (Rosica) from the Neurodiversity Employment Network talked about universal access, clear accommodation processes, mentorship, and community. An exciting insight shared was that employee satisfaction increased across the board, not just for those with disabilities, when inclusive practices were implemented. As we dive into creating more inclusive workplaces, it's essential to support employees from early career stages, especially those with disabilities or neurodivergence, focusing on their strengths and providing the necessary support.
