Talia Stroud of the Center for Media Engagement - The University of Texas at Austin says research shows people trust local news organizations, but resources and staffing have declined and cash-strapped newsrooms could struggle to identify and combat misinformation before the election. Our team at The Beacon is hard at work on election projects, trying to combat the false and misleading information coming our way, especially with the rise of AI. The upcoming election will be our first major one in the age of AI. We can’t know how bad it will be yet, but there are signs we’ll face more propaganda, lies, and misinformation than ever before. We’re not ready. How do I know? Facts take time, and lies are growing at scale. No matter your political views, accurate information is essential for voters to make informed decisions that shape our society. Supporting local newsrooms is crucial for our democracy.
