I just saw a post by someone trying to defend generative AI by comparing it to recording tools like a still image or video camera. Friends, they are not the same thing. Cameras capture reality. They capture moments you want to remember. AI does not. They also tried to compare generative AI to electronic instruments like synthesizers and electric guitars. The difference is that you can use a synthesizer to compose a piece of music that expresses your emotions. Generative AI must depend on an existing work to start with, and even then it doesn't express emotion. If at all successful, it merely continues the emotion that had already been captured by the original work. Worse, generative AI is not the work of an artist. It's the work of a machine trying vainly to piggyback on the work of others. It's not art. Art isn't slavishly doing what someone else already did. You're not thrilling me with "wow, we can make the Mona Lisa talk!" That's not emotionally affective, unless you want me to feel disgust. In my mind, the ONLY reason to develop generative AI is because you're too cheap to pay a real artist or actor for their craft. Because anything developed by AI lacks human nuance, the insight that can only come from a lived experience. Making long-since passed away actors perform for your amusement -- or at worst, for money -- is the work of a ghoul, desperately mining the value of someone else's work for their own gain without contributing anything of creative value to the continuum of art. I started to comment on the post, then I saw it had one Like and no comments. That's good enough.

AI in art hum, yes if you work a lot over it! Artificial intelligence has been at the forefront of discussions this year, captivating minds with its continuous updates and groundbreaking ideas. One such innovation that caught my attention was Midjourney, my trusted companion during testing. Witnessing its progress was truly jaw-awe-inspiring. As time went on, I found myself growing somewhat fatigued by the notion of a purely automated creative process, where everything was generated at the push of a button. It lacked the personal touch and depth that I craved. Driven by my desire to explore and expand my artistic journey, I embarked on a quest to discover new software that blended internal computation, generative actions, and manual interventions. This fusion allowed me to infuse my own creativity into the mix, resulting in a unique and captivating artistic workflow. With this approach, everything started to take shape in ways I hadn't imagined. The combination of automated generative actions and my manual interventions breathed life into my creations. It became a truly personalized experience, tailored to my artistic vision and preferences. Each artwork became a reflection of my artistic sensibilities, a testament to the harmonious collaboration between human ingenuity and the power of AI. No longer confined to the limitations of a single method, I found myself exploring uncharted territories, unveiling hidden potentials, and discovering new dimensions within my own artistic abilities. The beauty of this approach lies in its ability to strike a delicate balance between innovation and human touch. It empowers me to harness the remarkable capabilities of AI while infusing my own unique perspective and artistic flair. This captivating blend of technology and personalization has become an integral part of my daily art workflow, igniting a renewed sense of excitement and inspiration. Now I push myself to try the model expansion and put my own art into the dataset through the neuronal network and please Stable diffusion, to create my own art, but still, I miss my hands on something. Perhaps it's my age that makes me yearn for the tactile experience of an interactive tablet, or a brush, or maybe it's the tangible connection between my hand and the digital canvas that truly ignites my creativity. Regardless, I firmly believe that the creative process remains the quest of the artist in this day and age. It's a pursuit that compels us on a biological level, urging us to transform and make our artistic endeavors truly our own. It's a humbling experience. My art exhibition "Transformation" is running until the 10 November at the ART CURATORS HUB, in Wanchai, please feel free to have a look.

AI has the potential to transform various fields, including art and design. A panel discussion at MIT explored the impact of generative AI on creativity. The discussion focused on emergence, embodiment, and expectations. Generative AI can help artists reach ambiguities in their work, but it also raises concerns about artistic agency. While AI systems lack sensory interaction, they can still create rich sensory experiences. The panelists emphasized the need for meaningful human control in AI systems. They also discussed the limitations and biases of AI, urging caution in its use. Overall, generative AI presents exciting opportunities for creativity and self-reflection. *Summarized by Helpful

Generative AI is not a design tool but an intelligence tool, reflecting our own intelligence in both its strengths and weaknesses. One of the primary challenges today is that this technology often leads to producing replicas of existing work rather than fostering true originality. We must consider the biases inherent in language models and critically assess how generative AI impacts our intelligence, for better or worse. Music offers a valuable perspective on this idea. Miles Davis succinctly captured the essence of originality in a 1984 interview in Norway, where he said, "You have to be selfish to be original." This kind of selfishness, in its most human form, involves having the courage to embrace the unknown. Intelligence lies in exploring those unknowns, resisting the temptation to conform to existing patterns. Generative AI should be recognized as a tool that aids this exploration and focus, rather than just a means to generate output. The design process and design schools teaching the next generation of designers must help people become more comfortable with the unknown space of originality. This is the challenging area where we must explore the true nature of intelligence and the creativity it fosters.

What is the point in generating “artistic production” with generative AI? And I am very careful with not saying “generating art”, as I do not consider something made by a machine as “art”. Leonardo da Vinci’s works are considered as amazing works because they are made by a person: a human being like everyone else, with almost all the general capabilities that people have. So, when we look at Mona Lisa or The Last Supper, I am in the “Wow” emotion, not only because I am looking at a fabulous artwork, but also because I am amazed with the achievements of a human being. There is a process in generating a real piece of art that starts from the bottom of the heart of the artist: it is coming from not just a set of technical skills, but an internalized feeling, emotion, and understanding of the surrounding environment of that person. Something that a machine is not able to have. It is just impossible. Someone once asked me, “what do you think about creating a movie script with generative AI?” and I replied, “I just don’t watch that movie”. So, please don’t call those beautiful machine-made products “art”.

Generative AI increases artists’ ability to create highly rated work, at a higher rate of productivity. Over time though, it can lead to a ‘commodification’ of artistic output and a concentration of popular but generic work. At the same time, when leveraged to its full extent, it can fuel the creativity and innovation of artists to reach new heights. “Within the first few months post-adoption, text-to-image generative AI can help individuals produce nearly double the volume of creative artifacts that are also evaluated 50% more favorably by their peers over time. Moreover, we observe that peak Content Novelty increases over time, while average Content and Visual Novelty diminish. This implies that the universe of creative possibilities is expanding but with some inefficiencies.” Simply put, when used in the best way, generative AI can make great artists better and lift up those not already on a high level. When used indiscriminately, it can lead to an explosion of undifferentiated, mass-produced content that will overwhelm every available channel. It’s up to us to decide how much effort we put into reaching the best outcome. We need to work together on the tools, platforms and best practices needed for generative Ai to become net positive, not just for productivity, but for quality and new discoveries too. 4moWhenever I see someone trying to frame Generative AI as a legitimate art tool, I challenge them to *iterate.* Do that same image again, but make the figure in front looking 90 degrees right. Keep everything the same, but take down the keylight. I like that, but can you but her in a blue silk dress instead of the frilly nightgown? No, they can't. They have to start from scratch every time. That's not control, that's not mastery, that's not Art.
