World Cancer Day 2024: ThemeThe theme for the 2022-2024 period is “Close the Care Gap: Everyone Deserves Access To Cancer Care,” highlighting the need for global collaboration in the fight against cancer.

Remember all those missed doctor visits during the pandemic? We're starting to see how they affected cancer diagnoses. Last week, the American Cancer Society published Part 2 of its Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. The report shows a sharp drop-off of cancer diagnoses during the pandemic. That means missed opportunities for early detection and greater likelihood of later-stage diagnoses. The gap could lead to shorter survival rates and more deaths. As we enter #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, we're more committed than ever to expand access to early cancer detection, especially for populations who face significant barriers in receiving cancer care. For breast cancer specifically, there's notable urgency. Here's what the annual report found: ⚠ "Progress against breast cancer decelerated, as rates of new cases continued to increase by 0.5% each year and the decline in death rate slowed down after a period of steeper decline." ⚠ "The breast cancer death rate for Black women is 40% higher than the rate for White women. Systemic racism, socioeconomic status, and unequal access to healthcare and housing, as well as higher rates of aggressive breast cancer subtypes for Black women, are likely major factors responsible for this discrepancy." ⚠ "The most common cancer among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) was female breast cancer, which was highest among Black AYAs." Access issues and disparities don't fully go away just because COVID-19 is partially abated. Color is partnering with American Cancer Society to reduce barriers by offering an accessible cancer screening and prevention program designed for employers and built on evidence-based guidelines with fully-integrated and high-touch support throughout the full cancer continuum. Together, we can reach vulnerable populations by making screening easier to navigate, and readily accessible through workplace healthcare benefits programs. Research has shown the number of breast cancer diagnoses in younger women is increasing and I am glad to see that understanding the raise in cancer rates in younger individuals is one of the priorities for both the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Cancer Research UK. #breastcancer #breastcancerresearch #cancerresearch

It is easier to see correlations than to determine the causality of diseases in a large population. Access to high quality data from molecular diagnosis and fit for purpose real world data will be critical to generate meaningful hypotheses for solving a health problem. #moleculardiagnostics #realworlddata #populationhealth

They start you out young, with a disturbing amount of heavy metals in formula for babies. From there on in, through life, the available food options contain: preservatives, additives, fillers, and unnecessarily sweetened/full of sodium, etc. Any food options that are considered healthy, are still lower par than what it should be and are much more expensive. However, in this case, you have to pick your poison: either you pay for healthier products now (if you can afford it, which I know many people really can’t which is a whole other topic in itself) OR pay for it later in medical bills, medications, and therapies. Even if you make a simple switch on one item that is healthier, it’s still better than nothing. The entire food industry needs an overhaul. And the “Food” part of the Food and Drug Administration needs more funding, people and enforcement, because it’s more like the Drug and Food Administration. Tracking progress and gathering evidence are crucial steps to achieving WHO 90-70-90 targets when it comes to cervical cancer.
