5 Red Flags to Decline a Job Offer (And Why You Should) The job search process can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. When you finally receive a job offer, it's tempting to accept it right away. However, not all job offers are created equal. A new survey commissioned by VoiceNation has identified five "red flags" that cause job seekers to reject a job offer. Here's when and why you should consider declining: Salary not disclosed (38% of respondents): Transparency is key. If a company is unwilling to discuss salary, it may be a sign of bigger issues. Continual interview rescheduling (25%): While some rescheduling is normal, constant changes can indicate poor organization or lack of respect for your time. Disrespecting colleagues in front of you (23%): How a company treats its employees is a reflection of its culture. If you witness disrespect, it's a major red flag. Role is different than advertised (18%): Bait and switch tactics are not only frustrating, but also dishonest. If the role doesn't match what was promised, it's time to walk away. Inconsistent answers (18%): Conflicting information during the interview process can signal deeper problems within the organization. Trust your instincts if something feels off. Remember, the interview process is a two-way street. Just as a company evaluates you, you have the right to evaluate them. 🌬𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫: It's best to wait for the recruiter to make contact, about a job application. ℹ️ A recent US survey reported that 86% of recruiters and 62% of employers believe the job market is driven by candidates, meaning that candidates can have a significant influence on the hiring process. There are benefits to reaching out to specific job recruiters throughout the job application process, including the before, during and after stages. 𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆, there is benefit in contacting the recruiter to confirm that the vacancy is still available, to clarify expectations (e.g. which skills specified in the job ad are the employer's priorities), and to understand what needs to be included in the job application (e.g. how to address selection criteria). This is also an ideal time to introduce yourself as a keen candidate. 𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆, the benefit of following up on your job application is that you are demonstrating to the recruiter that you are highly interested as well as proactive. It may also give you peace of mind while undergoing the job-seeking process. You should wait a least a week before following up (while also factoring in job application cut-off dates). SEEK recently reported that 51% of hirers view applicants more positively if they follow up after their interviews, which no doubt also translates to the initial job application stage. 𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆, the benefit of making contact with the recruiter once you know you did not make it to the interview stage or obtain the job (i.e. post-interview) is that you can gain insights on why you weren't successful. In addition to this informing your future job applications as well as career development plans (e.g. additional training), it could leave you feeling reassured that you did your best (e.g. they selected someone with longer-term technical experience).
