Understanding Proposition 1 on the March 5th Ballot I've been deeply invested in learning about Proposition 1 on the March 5th ballot and its potential impact on communities like mine. Addressing mental health and homelessness challenges effectively requires careful consideration of all perspectives. I want to share some of what I've learned to spark informed discussion and encourage responsible voting. Proposition 1 📜Amends the Mental Health Services Act, potentially expanding services for individuals with severe mental illness and substance use disorders, including housing and treatment units. 📜Issues a $6.38 billion bond to fund new facilities and resources for vulnerable populations. 📜Prop 1 restructures MHSA to reallocate 2 billion of Prop 63 revenue annually to local government to construct new housing units in hotels, motels, and other buildings.  📜Prop 1 would require counties to redirect about 1/3 of mental health dollars to housing interventions. Arguments in favor of Prop 1: 📢 Increased access to services: Prop 1 could expand mental health services and housing options, particularly in underserved areas. This could improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for many individuals. 📢Housing as a foundation: Stable housing has been shown to improve mental health outcomes and support recovery. Prop 1's investment in housing could contribute to breaking the cycle of homelessness. ✅ A Yes Vote - will change the MHSA to include drug treatment services. Counties would need to change some of the mental health care and drug or alcohol treatment services provided currently to focus more on housing and personalized support services. Arguments against Prop 1: 📢Funding allocation: Some argue that Prop 1 diverts funds from existing services to prioritize housing, potentially neglecting other critical needs. 📢Loss of funding to programs traditionally funded through Prevention and Early Intervention. 📢Long-term financial impact: Concerns exist about the bond's long-term sustainability and its allocation's effectiveness. 🛑 A No Vote - will not change the Mental Health Services Act, and the state could not borrow 6.4 billion to build more treatment facilities and housing units. A balanced solution is required 💡 Expanding services and housing options could offer a more comprehensive approach to tackling mental health and homelessness challenges. 💡 Prioritizing prevention and early intervention alongside treatment and housing can lead to more cost-effective solutions in the long run. Housing insecurity effects a significant portion of Michiganders, and many more are one small financial setback from being at risk of losing their housing. Data from 2023 shows that in Michigan, 8,206 people are experiencing homelessness. SOH: State and CoC Dashboards - National Alliance to End Homelessness. People First means that we must come together to offer real solutions that not only address the outcomes that we deem unsightly, but also the root causes that put some of us at risk. We are challenging our Good For Michigan business community by asking them: How are you using your role as a business leader to address the root causes that can result in poverty, addiction, mental illness, and housing scarcity? Reading this, it is clear how much easier it is to create short-term, reactionary policies. In the face of massive systemic inequities, what can we do to address the real root causes? We can address our own teams and their needs - are any of your employees experiencing housing or food insecurity? If so, would they feel safe and supported letting you know? Assessing wage and benefits packages to ensure that your team members are getting their mental, physical, and financial needs met. Providing de-escalation and Narcan usage trainings, conflict management training, and ensuring that your employees are aware of the amenities that are offered in or around your business (such as free or inexpensive public transportation, ambassador or homeless outreach contacts, and mental health crisis rapid response) can help your team feel safe and empowered, while centering the humanity and dignity of all people. By taking a proactive and wholistic approach, we can reach solutions that truly put People First. Everyone can be an agent of change.💜

Solving California's homelessness crisis in 2024 requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes and provides sustainable solutions. Collaborative Research Approaches Needed to Tackle Spokane's Homelessness Emergency: Homelessness continues rising sharply across Washington, but especially in Spokane County. Our latest data shows Washington State has the third highest per capita homelessness rate, trailing only New York and California. Locally, Spokane County’s homeless population spiked 36% from 2022 to 2023 – triple the 12% national average. The Spokesman-Review has numerous outstanding writers effectively exposing Spokane’s surging crisis. Emry Dinman's coverage of the rapid growth in homelessness was eye-opening. Alexandra Duggan's reporting on the high mortality among the unhoused spotlights the critical need for solutions. Maurice Smith’s call for a “moon shot” approach deserves serious consideration, especially by city leaders. Behind these troubling statistics lie real human costs: 177 unhoused Spokane residents died last year, up from 144 in 2022. On average, homeless individuals die 30 years prematurely, frequently from untreated illness and addiction. Over 1,000 homeless children in our community confront developmental delays and trauma from instability and neglect. While temporary shelters provide short-term relief, they don’t resolve the root driver of homelessness: a drastic shortage of affordable housing. With rents escalating by 20% alongside doubling home prices since 2016, lower-income residents face impossible trade-offs for healthcare, childcare, and other basics. To curb homelessness, we must target its primary causes – housing and employment. Long-term solutions like zoning reform and construction require time. But we can immediately expand rental assistance, convert unused properties into transitional housing, and incentivize landlord participation to increase inventory. Tracking program outcomes allows quick adjustments when tactics falter – an essential yet frequently neglected feedback loop. Housing means little without supportive services. We must remember that mental health issues and addiction often result from, not cause, homelessness. Integrating treatment into housing sustains progress. Harm reduction prevents overdoses. Employment assistance enables self-sufficiency. With compassion alongside collaborative research, we can make headway. My recent peer-reviewed research confirms what our local media have been focusing on - that the cost of living index, primarily housing affordability, is a dominant factor related to homelessness. Academia can help investigate knowledge gaps to help policymakers implement evidence-based solutions.
