One of the best books for Product Managers was written by a Navy SEAL. "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Willink. In the book, he describes that good leaders are those who own everything and take full responsibility for everything in their world. No excuses. This is akin to the role of the PM. You are solely responsible for the success or failure of your product. Here’s what this means in practice: Dev team isn't building what you want? It's on YOU to improve your communication and ensure there is 100% alignment. Sales is selling things the product can't do? It's on YOU to help them understand product limitations and know how to provide feedback from the market. Marketing is not effectively driving leads? It's on YOU to help them understand your product’s value proposition and enable them with collateral. #productmanagement #leadership #jockowillink #extremeownership

As a leader refrain from sharing your opinion too early. If you truly want to know your team’s opinion on something, hold your opinion till the end. If you share first, they will be more likely to just agree with you simply because you are the boss! Hopefully not the result you were looking for… Don’t say: “I think we need to focus more on selling X. I was looking at our conversation rate with X product and it’s the highest and it’s one of our largest ARR products. So I’m working to launch an X campaign. What do you think?” Start with the question and the goal: “We are looking to run a campaign to increase pipeline generation over the next couple months. What product do you think would have the biggest impact and why?” And then listen! Have a discussion as a team with the front lines and you’d be surprised what you learn. #teambuilding #culture #leadership

It's not the tech stack that will make it work. It's not the methodology that will make it work. It's not the branding that will make it work. It's not the team structure that will make it work. It's not the strategy that will make it work. All of those things can be big pieces of a successful #GTMstrategy. They can play a critical part in whether a company achieves or misses their goals. But not as much as the people. The people will make it work. The right people, looked after in the right way, with the right tools and direction (including the above) will be the ones who decide if it works or not. Build the right team and give them the right support and coaching and you'll move mountains. #coaching #leadership #gtm #sales #marketing

Developing a strong product strategy depends on one raw ingredient above all: insights. Being good product leaders, we hunt for these insights and try to pump them around our org so everyone has the latest and greatest context. Things improve, but not as much as we hoped. Why? In our eagerness to improve, we've lost sight of what makes an insight an insight. While everyone advocates for insight-driven strategy, insights are rarely defined. So what is an insight, really? An insight is an understanding of the true nature of something. Important “somethings” you want insight into are your customers, their challenges, their hidden motivations and worldview, the nature of the market you compete in, new enabling technologies, industry shifts, and many more. We earn these insights through deep investigation. An insight is not just a data point. An insight shines new light: we become enlightened to the truth of something. This yields a deeper, intuitive understanding of how that thing really works. This understanding fundamentally changes how we think about a situation, and makes our ensuing actions far more likely to be effective. #strategy #productstrategy #productmanagement #leadership #decisionmaking
