The MOST COMMON mistake to make when hiring senior sales talent: Last week (when the weather was better than now), I was on the phone to a potential client who says… “We’re hiring our first sales (Head of /Director) but we don’t want to pay them a bonus or commission? “ “WHAT?” (I hear you say.. exactly my reaction too!) They went on to explain that they want someone who will stay the course through their next round of funding and beyond, growing a sales team with some great future prospects! But reality is… they will become frustrated, be headhunted, leave and then you’re left with an empty seat that you need to fill again. So, why does the tenure of sales leaders matters more than ever and paying them what they are really worth! A frequent turnover at the top can disrupt the foundation of any business. Here's the ripple effect: When a VP of Sales leaves after a short while: 💼 The business: lost bonuses (if any) and budget cuts. 👯♀️ The Team: disruption with rehiring cycles. 🤝 Customers and clients: fractured relationships; new rep frustrations. ❌ Sales Leader: lots of movement means the reputation hits, reduced marketability. When a VP of Sales excels and is rewarded in the right way: 📶The business: New projects funded which means future looks prosperous. 😍The Team: stability, happiness, drive; team thrives. 🤝 Customers and clients: enhanced resources; deeper trust. 📈 Competitors: industry-wide uplift and growth. 🏆 Sales Leader: personal gains, path to future career possibilities and commitment! In the ever-changing Senior Sales landscape, stable sales leadership becomes pivotal. #salesleaders #sales #cambridge #recruiting #recruitment #seniorsales #cambridgehires #scaleup #startup

Three years ago, I placed the first sales hire at a seed-funded startup. This individual contributor was given the title of "Director of Sales" and reported directly to the founder. The opportunity included a potential promotion to Vice President of Sales, contingent on performance, with the promise of building and leading a sales team. Here’s what happened: 🔹 Year 1: He exceeded his quota. 🔹 The company hired three additional sales reps, all reporting to the Founder. 🔹 Year 2: He again exceeded his quota. 🔹 The company secured Series A funding. 🔹 The company then hired an external candidate as their first VP of Sales. This raises a crucial question: How can a company determine if a top-performing sales rep can succeed as a VP of Sales without giving them the opportunity? While it’s true that the best sales reps don’t always make the best sales leaders, and vice versa, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

It takes 3–6 months to hire an enterprise sales rep or sales manager. On average, it takes six months for a sales person to be fully ramped up and to start bringing in revenue. Revenue Executives need to be thinking about 2024 and bring in new team members this quarter. At CFW Careers, we partner with sales leadership and internal talent teams to help them build commercial teams so they can focus on their revenue goals. Founders - Bring on 2 sales reps before hiring a sales leader. I often hear founders say they want a sales leader because they are not good at sales. A sales leader may be better at sales, but it doesn’t make them the right fit for the earliest stage. Nobody is better to take in market feedback in the earliest stages than the founder. You can make immediate decisions that significantly impact the direction of the company. Additionally, nobody will be more helpful at closing early deals than the founder. You bring a viewpoint to a customer challenge that nobody else has. Once those reps are hitting quota, and you feel confident you have product market fit? Thrown gas on the fire and bring on your first sales leader.

Absolutely, Callan Harrington's insights unveil a strategic approach to scaling sales teams! 🔥 Here's what I've learned from his experience, advice, and wisdom: 1. **Founder's Unique Insights:** Founders possess an unmatched connection to their product and vision, making them the ultimate receptors of market feedback during the early stages. Your hands-on involvement drives agile decisions and shapes the company's trajectory. 2. **Founder-Customer Synergy:** Your ability to bridge the gap between customer challenges and your product's solutions is unparalleled. This synergy fosters genuine connections, fostering a foundation of trust that's essential for early deal closures. 3. **Sales Reps as Igniters:** Bringing in 2 sales reps before a sales leader helps ignite growth. Their collective efforts, guided by your vision, lay the groundwork for initial success, validating your product-market fit. As a founder, your unique blend of passion, insight, and strategic thinking sets the stage for dynamic sales growth. Harness your strengths, and when the time is right, introduce a sales leader to elevate your sales force and fuel the fire you've started. 🚀 #FounderInsights #SalesScaling *This post has been edited by AI.
