#cloudarchitecture #cloudstrategy #multicloud Do you have a multi-cloud strategy? Well, maybe you do. Often, technologists use multi-cloud architecture and multi-cloud strategy interchangeably. I made that mistake during my early days as a cloud architect.   The question "Do you know why you decided to go multi-cloud?" can unravel whether your organization has a multi-cloud architecture or a multi-cloud strategy.   The answer lies in one of four quadrants: Conscious choice, Conscious compulsion, Unconscious choice, Unconscious compulsion. Note: The quadrant where the answer lies changes depending on where the organization is in its cloud journey. Hindsight allows organizations to move from the unconscious quadrants to the conscious ones, and from the compulsion quadrant to the choice ones.   What do these quadrants mean?   Conscious choice: Organizations deciding to go multi-cloud from day one make a conscious choice. They clearly articulate why multi-cloud is necessary to achieve their business objectives. Multi-cloud is part of their cloud strategy. They invest in teams, technology, and processes aimed at a borderless cloud from the start. Hindsight allows organizations which didn't start with a conscious multi-cloud strategy to move to this quadrant eventually.   Conscious compulsion: Nimble organizations adopt multi-cloud in response to a compelling event, like an acquisition, sticky workloads, or an irresistible commercial offer. They start with a multi-cloud architecture, and the strategy follows as hindsight.   Unconscious choice: Organizations in competitive businesses running multiple business lines make an unconscious choice for multi-cloud. A spurt in technology adoption driven by business compulsions results in multiple business lines adopting technology products from firms partnered with various hyperscalers. This choice unconsciously leads to a multi-cloud architecture, and the strategy follows as hindsight.   Unconscious compulsion: This scenario is rare these days due to increased awareness among technologists about the benefits and drawbacks of multi-cloud. Active engagement between businesses and IT leadership pre-empts this occurrence. In the past, such scenarios occurred when architectural decisions aimed to please all stakeholders, resulting in poor ROI for the organization.   Good news! Due to experience, hindsight, and awareness, organizations are moving to "conscious choice" decisions on multi-cloud, implementing not just a multi-cloud architecture but also a multi-cloud strategy.   If you're a cloud technologist, it's interesting to reflect on the question: "Why did we choose multi-cloud?" and perhaps follow it up with "Do we have a multi-cloud strategy or a multi-cloud architecture?" The answer might surprise you!

Architecture is about business transformation.  For every architecture, I ask myself these questions. What are the business's goals and vision? What is the optimal business architecture? What are the optimal business processes? Does the tech support the business goals, objectives and ideal business processes? If the answer is "yes" to all of these; then the architecture will most likely drive transformation and be successful. If organizations are to achieve sustained success in their technology modernization initiatives, senior leaders should stop thinking of "cloud" as a "place" to send their workloads. According to Thoughtworks North America executives Ajay Chankramath (Head of Platform Engineering) and Wesley Reisz (Technical Principal), business and technology leaders ought to instead embrace the notion that "cloud" is a platform-based "operating model" that will lay the foundation for enterprise-wide systems integration, agility and resilience. Chankramath and Reisz sat down for a podcast interview after a series of executive roundtable discussions in New York City exploring the state of application modernization in the context of accelerating business transformation initiatives. "When we first started talking about cloud computing around a decade ago, it was usually discussed as a location to put compute capacity that was not on-premises," explains Reisz. This conceptualization – which primarily positioned the cloud as a method of OPEX outsourcing – has not served the enterprise community particularly well. According to Chankramath, embracing cloud operating models provides the foundation for moving applications around enterprise infrastructures in a much more agile and performant manner. "For a growing number of organizations, a high level of agility is critical. As a result, technology leaders are looking for the ability to put the right resources in the right places quickly – whether on-prem, at the edge or in one or more cloud environments. Cloud operating systems, along with a platform-based approach to developing enterprise architectures, makes this possible," he says. 

This article thoughtfully addresses key issues. The Cloud may not always be the most efficient choice for specific high-performance demands or cost efficiency. Nevertheless, its advantages in enhancing business flexibility and agility could justify its use. Therefore, it is crucial for Cloud and Solutions Architects to conduct a thorough analysis of the client's business case, considering performance, security requirements, and workflow patterns to devise a solution that meets the client's needs effectively, affordably, and promptly.
