The 5 biggest digital opportunities of 2024. The physical and digital worlds are becoming less distinct. There are few Consumer decisions or actions that don’t involve a screen. What a week it was Groceryshop! In addition to the highlights below, recurring themes I heard included: 💰 Value: which is more than just price. It's experience and personalization and essential for retaining loyal consumers. 🍎 Wellness: the lines between grocery/food/healthcare/prevention continue to blur. Expect to hear more about food as medicine in the months to come. 💻 Technology: As data becomes even more of an imperative, so too are the tools to manage it. But don't just invest in tech - invest in the people and processes to get the most out of it. I'm grateful for the insights, connections and opportunity to make the grocery experience even better for consumers, brands and retailers. I'm also grateful it's Friday! 😃

Retailers are breaking down their 'walled gardens,' revolutionizing how they collect and manage product data from suppliers. Walmart's new Omnispec API is an example of this as it simplifies the whole process by combining data requirements for both physical and online stores. It’s not just a win for retailers, but also suppliers that need to navigate a complex web of data submission systems. This change is accelerating the retail industry's evolution, making it more efficient and consumer-friendly. Will the 2024 Retailer Playbook... leave your Brand behind? Maybe. It depends. The problem with tight Economies: Consumers are less brand loyal. There's very little surprise there. But that doesn't apply only to Brands. Retailers can be faced with the same problem. Peter Gialantzis recently pointed something out to me that is very important. Brands, distributors, and retailers all want the same thing: For Consumers to buy products. It sounds simple, but we often lose site of that and start pointing fingers. With all of that said, the Retailer often gets the last word. They're closest to the shopper, and they're executing a retail strategy. Are we paying close enough attention to participate? It is becoming clearer and clearer that Retailers are driving toward: 1. Omnichannel experience. (Providing the fulfillment *customers* want.) 2. Retail Media. (Getting the best products and info in front of the customer.) 3. Online Engagement. (Responsive customer service and problem solving.) 4. Immersive in-store experiences. (Interactive screens and apps.) (If you still need them, numerous links comments.) In other words, Retailers know they need to join the digital revolution. Are we building and executing strategies that sync with theirs? Appreciate the article from Noemi Lardizabal-Dado sharing our work with Prince Retail Group of Companies in the Philippines. The Philippines has long been poised to make great strides supply chain. In my experience, it has the greatest areas of opportunity. My observation is that the ecosystem is mostly disjointed which is dominated by aggregators and wholesalers who dominate the market and control the cost of goods. Retailers who decide to control their own supply chain underpinned by a steady grasp of demand are in a unique position to reduce waste, buy less, and optimize their margins using AI to improve availability and manage the volatile seasonal harvests. Working closely with suppliers over long time horizons with accurate forecasts will likely create a competitive edge for retailers in the future with closer ties to the means of production. In a price-sensitive market - this could drive footfall and loyalty for years to come.

During the "Ber months" from September to December, the Philippines is abuzz with holiday cheer. Donald Felbaum from RELEX Solutions shares with Noemi Lardizabal-Dado from The Manila Times on how retailers can craft high-value ‘Ber months’ promos with AI in omnichannel retail. In a recent interview, Prince Retail Group of Companies said, "The use of AI greatly supported us to improve our decision-making with data-driven insights that ultimately catalyzed our growth and enabled us to serve our customers better than before".
