Great article from ZS highlighting the importance of addressing obesity - and the value and challenges of implementing new solutions like GLP-1s. They highlight two important changes: First, redefining the journey from weight loss to weight management and recognizing that each patient is unique so there is no one "solution" but as many solutions as there are patients and second, pursing population health-based models to make adoption of obesity treatment broadly viable. We're enabling both of these at Ilant Health with our Metabolism Matters and Rapid Returns model. Excited to see others calling out the importance of treatment matching and value-based, population-based support! https://lnkd.in/dWFRxNWK Elina Onitskansky Jessica Muse Keith Passwater Paul Bergen William (Bill) Coyle Howard Deutsch Karishma Trikha Raluca Cenusa

This is such a false economy. It’s time for policy makers to invest in prevention strategies because it’s pretty clear Australia has an obesity problem which is now being exploited by digital marketing platforms offering a quick expensive fix. Harriet Grayson for the Health Services Daily #prevention #healthequity Only 0.1% of the federal government’s health budget targeted obesity prevention over the past nine years, new Deakin University research has shown. The study, published in a special issue of the Sax Institute’s Public Health Research & Practice, showed that between 2013 and 2022, investment in obesity prevention initiatives totalled approximately $778 million across federal health budgets between 2013 and 2022. According to the National Obesity Strategy, in 2018, obesity cost the Australian community $11.8 billion and if nothing was done, may cost an estimated $87.7 billion [per year] by 2032.

"The World #Obesity Federation (WOF) estimates 2.7 billion adults will be overweight or obese by 2025. Until not long ago, obesity was considered a #health issue limited to developed countries. We now know it is a global, societal and medical burden with far-reaching implications. The upward trend is relentless and only compounded by childhood obesity. It is projected that more than half of the global population will be overweight and obese by 2035, leading to long term medical complications such as diabetes, heart, brain, and kidney disease. In addition to physical suffering, the healthcare costs would be staggering." - KCR Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anna Baran Today is #WorldObesityDay - a global awareness campaign to reduce, prevent and treat obesity. Those living with obesity deserve health professionals who understand the complexity of obesity & provide respectful, dignified and empathetic treatment that focuses on health. A stigma-free consultation should be a safe space where people can discuss the impact excess weight/obesity has on their life & health. A place to share an understanding about the complex biology regulating body size and evidence based treatment options without blame or shame. A collaborative approach with shared decision making to develop an individualised management plan that is acceptable to the individual. Many thanks to Obesidades Mx for allowing us to translate/adapt their recent post for healthcare professionals on reducing weight stigma in practice. Weight bias refers to negative attitudes and stereotypes about obesity and people living with obesity - judging a person’s values, skills, abilities, or personality based on body weight/size. Weight bias is pervasive in healthcare - every symptom is blamed on excess weight and people are told to lose weight (without any support or treatment being offered). Weight bias from healthcare professionals can lead to an avoidance or delay in seeking medical care, reduced participation in screening programmes, reduced compliance with management strategies and overall worse health out-comes.
