In today's The Wharton School Human Capital Management class with Peter Cappelli, we learned some striking findings on internal promotions vs. external hires:
1) +95% of #hiring is to backfill turnover
2) On average, companies only fill ~1/3rd of vacancies by promoting from within
3) The most important factor for involuntary exiting is #career advancement.
According to Professor Matthew Bidwell's study on banks, promoting from within leads to significantly better performance outcomes for the first 2 years and lower exit rates. Interestingly, external hires are also initially paid ~18% more than promoted workers for similar roles.
What do you think? Are we underappreciating those around us?

Promotions, often glorified as pinnacle career milestones, might not be the grand success they're cracked up to be.
In my latest Forbes piece, I uncover a shocking revelation that challenges the rosy facade of career elevation.
Contrary to common belief, a recent ADP study has unmasked a grim truth: a staggering one-third of newly promoted managers decide to call it quits shortly after their internal elevation!
What's driving this alarming trend?
What unseen pitfalls lurk behind the coveted promotion veil?
Read more as I uncover the perplexing reasons driving these statistics and dissect the implications for both fledgling managers and the organizations they serve.

First off, LinkedIn and my network were truly one of the things that got my through what was a couple of truly unprecedented years of job market instability that I truly felt had permanently derailed my career.
I knew I would get through but obviously doubt, instability and just plain vacancy in my professional development made me wonder if I’d ever rejoin the workforce and work to my capabilities.
I’m happy to say that I feel like I have.
Here’s particularly what I’m doing now:
I’m fortunate to be back working directly in my city to help businesses thrive so that communities prosper.
That means that I’m working from the operational side to advocate and advise business on everything from compliance, benefits and technology that can give HR structure to the business success they will have. All that to say, the failure was worth it in the past because now I can work from that experience to make sure my partners don’t have to go through similar struggles.
Excited for this move and glad to be a part of Insperity.

Dear Hiring Managers and HR fraternity,
Do you remember the excitement and nervousness of your last year of MBA, when you were desperately searching for a good job to kickstart your career? I vividly remember that feeling. It was during that time that a hiring manager took a chance on me and gave me the break I needed to make a difference.
That one opportunity completely changed my trajectory and allowed me to bring about positive changes in the world around me. Now I urge you to look around you, in your MBA colleges or within your own networks, and consider giving a chance to someone who has the potential to make a significant impact. Just as someone did for me.
Let's pay it forward and entrust the next generation of professionals with the opportunity to shine and make a difference in the world. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positivity and change. 🌟

If only finding the words to advocate for your career advancement was this quick and easy!
A huge thank you to Rippling for purchasing these 50 signed books to give away to the first attendees at LincolnHR next week where we’ll kick off this year with career advancement strategies.
As HR people, we spend so much time and energy suggesting, promoting and talking about career development for everyone else. It’s our turn!
As HR (learning & development, training, etc) professionals, it’s important to invest in your own career as much as you do for everyone else. I'll show you how to advocate for your own career with clarity and confidence.
You'll learn how to:
✨ Claim Your Role As a Confident Leader. Define what you stand for as a leader so you can make career choices in alignment to your values and leave a lasting impact on the business you serve
✨Lead With Your Unique Talents. Identify the unique talents, skills and gifts that only YOU can deliver, align your HR role with your talents and use it to advance your career and drive business results
✨Advocate to Advance Your Career. Use an advocacy model that can help you both articulate the value you bring to the organization and communicate it in a compelling way your business partners and colleagues will understand.
Even if you aren't in an official HR role, you'll find value in this session. Registration closes January 8! Hope to see you there!
