Great to connect with and learn from leading innovative health systems and solution providers at the Hospital @ Home Leadership Summit. It's clear that the movement to home-based care for patient needs across the care continuum is real, is much needed, and is accelerating, and those who aren't considering the home as a part of their overall care delivery approach will fall behind. Here are a few of the themes that my Chartis colleagues Mark Krivopal, MD, MBA and Ryan Bertram found particularly notable: *There’s an growing distinction between 2 segments of health systems: those who are ‘H@H-curious’, are planning programs, or have just launched, and those with established programs. The former are looking to better understand how to activate their program. The latter are looking to better understand how to scale and expand. * There’s a growing movement to evolve from the singular H@H use case to more of a holistic care delivery platform that can support the ecosystem of care across the continuum. *Culture, Culture, Culture. Regardless of the stage of program maturity, health systems find cultural challenges inherent in the innovative care model represented by H@H to be the largest impediment to activation and growth. Comprehensive and persistent communication and education programs are absolutely required for success. #culture *While there’s general optimism about an increasingly favorable regulatory and reimbursement environment at both the federal and state levels, there are still open questions about how to navigate that landscape. Chief transformation officers inspire, model and implement lasting change at their organizations. That’s according to Becker's Healthcare, who recently named Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCM, UH's Chief Quality & Clinical Transformation Officer, Veale Distinguished Chair in Leadership and Clinical Transformation, to their “49 Chief Transformation Officers to Know” list for the second year in a row. According to Becker’s, “many of these leaders focus on making cultural changes at their health care organizations, while others zero in on improving the digital experience or restructuring the care delivery model.” Becker’s noted that “Dr. Pronovost is charged with aligning the University health system around a common purpose to design and implement a framework for believing, belonging and building. He has implemented a management system that allows the health system to transform under fee-for-service, win value contracts and enhance community access to services. He has led the system in its pursuit towards zero harm and developed a model that focuses on preventative care and chronic illness recovery.” Dr. Pronovost leads the newly established Veale Initiative for Health Care Innovation at University Hospitals. Through this initiative, UH developed a novel approach to define, clarify and prioritize health care’s biggest problems and then find, test and scale solutions to those problems. The Veale Initiative will pilot groundbreaking innovations and technology with the ultimate goal to transform the entire sector. Congratulations Dr. Pronovost! #UHProud #transformation #culture #value #quality

Ever felt the weight of a health center's success solely on your shoulders? Many years ago, as a new CEO of a federally qualified health center, I faced countless challenging moments. What makes a sustainable healthcare system? This and other key questions took centre stage at the Safer Care Victoria Senior Leaders Symposium held recently as part of the successful International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare in Melbourne, Australia. The three-hour symposium brought together 125 health leaders, and featured expert panels, guest presentations, roundtable discussions and co-design activities. The event concluded with an address from SCV CEO, Professor Mike Roberts, highlighting the importance of a thriving healthcare workforce and patient-led approaches for a sustainable healthcare system. Among the forums on the day, was a co-design session hosted by Associate Professor Leah Heiss of Monash University Design Health Collab, as well as an expert panel discussion on ‘Innovation and impactful initiatives: the imperative for a sustainable future’. Topics ranged from patient-led care and the role of AI and data in healthcare, to the relationship between private and public healthcare models and new methods for evaluating efficacy. Participants engaged in insightful discussions focused on various themes, including supporting consumer engagement, providing clinical teams with data-driven improvements, the role of clinicians in system change, collaboration in public/private partnerships, and the impact of virtual and emerging technologies. Attendees shared practical insights and experiences, presenting a range of perspectives into strengths and areas for improvement in the healthcare system, as well discussing the importance of worker well-being and reducing disparities in access to care. Ideas and feedback will contribute to a summary report to support further innovation. #Healthcare #QualityandSafety #Melbourne2023 #Conference #QualityHealthcare #SafetyInHealthcare #HealthcareInnovation #Networking #Quality2023 #Melbourne #safercarevictoria #healthcareimprovement #instituteforhealthcareimprovement #bmj

I recently watched an interesting TED Talk on leadership in healthcare led by Susan Carter who is an Administrative Director at Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Vanderbilt. It is titled What’s Love Got to Do With It? Leadership in New Era of Healthcare. What stood out to me when listening to Susan Carter. was that healthcare workers want to be value and know that what they are doing has purpose. Typically, healthcare workers enter the field because they have the desire to want to help people. In healthcare currently, the focus is on metrics and the bottom line. The team doing a majority of the operational work with the patients aren’t always included in decisions for the healthcare facility. This TED Talk really showed how when a leader values their employees and partners with the employee to implement change leads to better outcomes for the organization. By showing the staff that leadership cares the path to change becomes easier because of a shared vision and wanting to accomplish the new policy or change in practice when staff is involved in the decision process. This reminds me of the transformational style of leadership. These leaders “give individuals and groups opportunities to shape and contribute to a shared and inspiring vision” ( Murtagh 2023). It is where a leader seeks input from their teams to help advance each other to a higher level of accomplishment together. Having heart as Susan Carter refers to is something that I hope to incorporate into my own leadership toolbox. Having empathy for the people that you work with and have the ability to reflect on how policies or projects may affect their psychological safety is a skill of a great leader. The ability to work with your team to stimulate them intellectually and to challenged the status quo for effective change in public health is very important. This is especially important, since public health is always challenging the status quo to keep communities healthy.
