Reliability is a must have startup trait. Without it, you will not last. No startup has time for unreliable people. What does this look like? Well, for one… Showing up 100% everyday. If they have to worry about… - Your ability to hit deadlines. - Your ability to communicate timely. - You coming in after a long weekend. - Your consistency of high quality work. That’s not good. If they’re spending valuable time thinking about you and your job… They’re not thinking about the business that needs to be built. They can’t afford to waste that time. If you’re in a role at a startup… Strive to be Mr/Ms Consistency. Scare the prospect How to scare the prospect? - There will be chaos - There will be too much work - Tell them, there will be days when we cannot promise work-life balance 2. Show them the upside How to show them the upside? - We will solve it together - It will be crazy fun - You will get a salary as per the market rate - Plus there will be ESOPS, which can be 100x in 2/3 years 3. Promise them a world of learning Then wait. Are they up for the challenge? In startups, the first team members solves bigger problems. It is important to get the hungry ones in your team. Hungry for the challenge Hungry for growth Hungry for learning Hungry for making wealth for themselves and in process Hungrier for making the startup bigger and better with complete ownership. Don't compromise. Don't get anyone on the team just because you are new in the block. Get the hungry ones who join you because you are new and have bigger challenges for them. No job is guaranteed, but startups offer unparalleled opportunities for growth and learning new skills. I've seen many companies taking advantage of this uncertainty to cut costs. That said, companies should value and fairly compensate employees based on their talent. Attracting top talent means recognizing and rewarding their skills appropriately. The skills you gain in one year at a startup could take 3-4 years to acquire at an established company.
