AI-generated misinformation, such as deepfakes, is already impacting US elections, from fake robocalls to falsified recordings. With the presidential election approaching, there's an urgent need for legislation to address this challenge. However, with just nine months to go, Congress has yet to take meaningful action to safeguard our electoral integrity, and the prospects of sweeping regulation are becoming more dim by the day. AI-driven disinformation, such as political #deepfake content, could “undermine public confidence in the electoral process and the credibility of government institutions", according to a new report from Moody's. Whilst new rules are being proposed to require disclosure of #synthetic content in advertisements, and social media platforms are beginning to adopt similar measures, such approaches are not fool-proof and can be difficult to enforce consistently. The only robust method to make a judgement on content #authenticity is by understanding its #origins through #provenance solutions. This marks the beginning of a crucial mindset shift in society, prompting us to re-think how we consume and interpret electoral information.
