Such an important topic and close to my heart following my diagnosis with Type 1 Diabetes at the start of this year. So thought I would share some T1D facts 💉❓ 🦠T1D is an autoimmune disease in which the insulin producing cells of the pancreas become destroyed by the immune system, therefore, leaving the body unable to produce insulin that we all need to be able to allow glucose to reach our cells for energy. 💉 Type 1 Diabetics rely on insulin injections/pumps to survive, as well as Continuous Glucose Monitors/Finger Pricking throughout the day to test glucose levels to check they are in range. This means for me around 4 insulin injections a day as well as around 8 finger pricks a day to test glucose levels. 💊Insulin is not a cure for T1D. There currently is no cure which is why awareness and fundraising is so important. Insulin helps us to survive but too little insulin can result in dangerously high blood sugars which can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis, where harmful levels of ketones build up in the blood. Equally, too much insulin can lead to dangerously low blood sugar levels which cause Hypoglycaemia, where we have to treat our lows with fast acting carbohydrates to bring them back up to normal levels. 🌍There are around 8.4 million Type 1 Diabetics worldwide, we make up roughly around 5% of all diabetics worldwide, the majority being Type 2. 🍬T1D is not caused by eating too much sugar as a child, or diet, weight, gender etc. It can be genetic, but most of the time, it is completely random. 📈There are over 40 factors that affect your blood glucose levels, including food consumed, insulin levels, exercise, stress, hormones, temperature, sleep, illness and dehydration to name just a few! 🤔Type 1 Diabetics on average make 180 more decisions per day regarding their health than people without diabetes, including the amount of carbs to eat, how much insulin to inject, how much exercise you’re likely to do, the temperature etc. ✅ The only thing that Type 1 Diabetics can’t do that everyone else can do is produce insulin!
