Disney invested $1.5 Billion in Epic Games, reviving their People’s Play-Doh strategy. 💗 The People's Play-Doh is a brand that lives through its community of fans. But they have always felt like a 'playable' brand through their park innovations. #Disney allowing #Fortnite creators to make "Disney-themed gaming experiences" within the Unreal editor is HUGE, but why? A few days ago, The Walt Disney Company CEO, Robert Iger, confirmed that as part of their $1.5bn investment into Epic Games, the company is going to allow users creative freedom when it comes to utilizing their IP within Fortnite. But why is this news worthy? Because for the first time, within gaming, you're seeing a major IP owner (that is truly iconic throughout generations) say to the gaming community 'go create'. This show's that Disney understand younger generations and how they want to interact with IP. How many other IP owners will be this bold? How many others will give trust to the community with their IP? How many others will clock on that this is the way to do it? GenZ and Gen Alpha want to create. Disney hasn't recovered enough to do this 🫢 News: Disney invests $1.5bn into Epic Games to expand Fortnite universe My take: Gaming seems like a logical step for the company, but given its current position, investing more than 60% of its 2023 net income with Epic Games might not be the wisest move at the moment. Given that the company hasn't bounced back from its low net income since the pandemic in 2020. My question is WHEN? In the announcement regarding the investment, they said "soon(ish)" and I couldn't help but wonder what exactly does that mean. 😟 Is this Disney attempting to make short-term gains by scratching the surface and generating hype? (investors wise) Or is this going to be one of their main focuses long-term?
