There is a big myth that we can repress memories, however the academic literature is very clear on this; there is no evidence to robustly support repression, quite the opposite. What we can do, however, is suppress memories. We do this for a variety of reasons, but a memory being too painful and traumatic to deal with is a common one. This is an important understanding because suppressed memories don’t stop effecting our behaviour and emotions, they instead affect us unconsciously. But with the right help we can start to pull those memories forward and work through them.
